United States

Bird cremation across the US: prices and state rules

About 6 million[2] US households keep pet birds, according to the American Pet Products Association's 2025 bird ownership report, spread unevenly across the country. Prices follow the general small-pet pattern: CareCredit's lowest band, for pets up to 30 lb, is communal $45-75; private $100-175[3]. Expect the upper end in big coastal metros and the lower end in rural areas and the South.

Regulation varies by state. By one directory's count, only 9 states[4] have pet-crematory licensing or consumer statutes, and as of April 2026 only 2 states[5], Illinois and Arizona, required written documentation for pet cremation. Elsewhere, getting a written confirmation of private cremation is up to you, so ask for it.

Of the US premises infected with bird flu through September 2025, 687 were backyard non-poultry flocks. If you keep birds outdoors and several die at once, your state veterinarian's office is the right first call.

United Kingdom

The UK: an unregulated market and new price rules

UK prices for pet cremation run from GBP 50 to GBP 300+[7], and a bird will sit at the very low end of any weight table. The trade body's own description of the sector to the competition regulator was blunt: Unregulated (per APPCC)[8]. Apart from the APHA approval rules for animal incinerators, nobody inspects how pets are handled, so the questions you ask matter more than any badge.

That's starting to change. Following the regulator's review, UK vet practices must set out prices for communal, individual and add-on cremation options. Bird flu is notifiable in the UK: if you suspect it in pet poultry or aviary birds, report it to the Animal and Plant Health Agency rather than arranging cremation yourself.

Australia, New Zealand and Canada

Bird-friendly price bands in Australia, New Zealand and Canada

Australia is bird country: 9%[9] of households keep birds, many of them native parrots such as cockatiels, galahs and budgerigars. An Australian survey of listed prices gives this figure for individual cremation of pets up to 5 kg: AUD 412 median[10]. That band covers every pet parrot.

In New Zealand, one Auckland provider's individual and communal prices are NZD 625/215; NZD 305/55[11] (a large dog first, then a 2 to 7 kg pet), which shows how wide the private-to-communal gap can be for small animals. In Canada, a Vancouver Island crematorium publishes private prices of CAD 195-315[12], and a bird falls in its smallest band, 0 to 20 lb. Always check whether prices include tax.

By our estimate, across eight countries a private cremation costs a median of ~2.0x[13] the communal price for the same size of pet, but the spread is wide: about 1.25 times in Tokyo and more than five times in Auckland. For a small bird, that multiple matters more than the headline price, so ask each local provider for both figures side by side before you decide.

Europe and beyond

Europe's large bird-keeping population, and small-pet prices

Europe keeps about 48.2 million[14] ornamental birds, by the FEDIAF facts and figures report, with Italy alone home to 12.9 million[15]. Some European price lists include a band just for the smallest pets. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[16], the first figure for pets under 2 kg and the second for cats or dogs up to 10 kg. Almost every pet bird falls into that first band.

Rules on garden burial differ a lot. Germany, for example, requires at least 50 cm of soil and bans it in water-protection areas. If you'd rather avoid burial rules entirely, cremation is the portable choice: ashes can move with you if you relocate.   • Will they collect from your home, your avian vet or a state diagnostic lab?
  • Is there a pickup fee, and does it change on weekends?
  • Does the quote include tax and a container, or only the cremation?
  • Are there local rules on burying a bird in your garden if you'd rather do that?

Moving house or country

Taking your bird's ashes with you when you move

Parrot owners move house, and sometimes country, during a bird's long life, and people often want the ashes of an earlier bird to come too. Cremated remains are generally easy to carry in hand luggage in a sealed container with the cremation certificate. Check your airline's rules first.

Questions people ask

Is bird cremation cheaper in rural areas?

Often, yes, though the pickup fee may be higher if the crematory is a long drive away. Rural providers may also be more used to handling pet hens and aviary birds. Compare the total including collection rather than the cremation fee alone.

Do I need a permit to cremate a pet bird?

Not for ordinary pet birds in the US, UK, Canada or Australia. Protected or wild-caught species can be different, and a few countries have specific rules for certain parrots. If your bird came with CITES paperwork, ask your avian vet whether anything needs to be notified.

Who do I call if I think my backyard birds died of bird flu?

In the US, contact your vet or state veterinarian's office. In the UK, report it to the Animal and Plant Health Agency. In Australia, call the Emergency Animal Disease Watch hotline. Don't move or cremate the birds until you've been told what to do.

Can I bury my bird in my garden?

In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of water sources. Rules differ by country and sometimes by town, and renters usually need permission. Don't bury a bird suspected of carrying an infectious disease until your vet agrees.

Why are there so few bird-specific crematories?

Because birds are a small part of the overall work, most providers handle them within general small-pet services rather than running separate bird cremations. That's usually fine. What matters is whether they use a tray for small bodies and confirm a private cremation in writing.
