Bird Cremation in New Zealand: what to know
In New Zealand, most families arrange a bird's cremation through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria. You can almost always contact a crematorium directly too. For a bird that's often easiest, because a small body is simple to bring in yourself and you can ask about small-animal handling face to face.
Bird cremation in New Zealand follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with the remains returned, or communal cremation without. What differs is how services are organised, what the smallest weight band costs and which authority to call if backyard or aviary birds die suddenly. Each city page below adds local detail.

Why local cremation habits matter for your bird
About 69%[1] of people in New Zealand are cremated, a share that has climbed steadily. Pet aftercare has moved the same way, especially among people in apartments and rentals who can't bury a pet at home. For bird keepers, that has made private cremation for very small animals easier to find than it was a generation ago.
We take the New Zealand percentage from The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
The real bill for a small bird, line by line
Australia is bird country: 9%[2] of households keep birds. An Australian survey of listed prices puts the median individual cremation for pets up to 5 kg at AUD 412[3], a band that covers every pet parrot. Communal cremation starts from AUD 80[4]. Prices around New Zealand will vary; ask for a written total.
Listed cremation prices vary a lot between Australian states[5], and RSPCA Queensland's individual memorial packages start from AUD 250[6]. For a bird in New Zealand, the smallest band applies, but collection and the container can change the total, so ask what's included.
| Option | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual, pets up to 5 kg (Australia, median) | AUD 412 median[3] | Range AUD 295 to 612 |

Burial, scattering and bird flu rules in New Zealand
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in New Zealand.
In New Zealand, councils set the rules on home burial, and many urban sections are too small or rented, so cremation is common for pet birds. If several backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, contact your vet or the Ministry for Primary Industries' exotic pest and disease hotline before burying or cremating them. Ask the crematorium whether individual cremation is confirmed in writing.
The first day, step by step
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Say the bird has died, use that word, and avoid phrases like "went to sleep".
- Let them see the bird if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth. Many children find it helps; don't insist if they don't.
- Give them a job: they might pick out a feather to save, make a drawing, or decide which shelf the container goes on.
- Keep your bird refrigerated until everyone has agreed whether it will be a garden burial or a cremation.
- Explain what cremation means without jargon: the bird's body becomes a little soft ash, and that ash comes back to the family.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Let your child feel the loss for a while, and when another bird comes up, let them help decide.
Remembering your bird in New Zealand
A bird's voice is often what people miss most. Go back through old phone videos for the whistles, words or the doorbell impression, and save the audio somewhere safe. Some families turn a favorite clip into a sound file they can play on the anniversary, or print a QR code for a memorial frame.

Questions people ask
Do winters in New Zealand affect burying a bird?
In the colder parts of New Zealand, frozen ground can make digging impossible for weeks or months. Many keepers freeze a small bird until the thaw, or cremate and bury the remains later. In New Zealand, one of the coldest places we cover, winter lows average about °F.
How much ash will my bird leave?
Very little. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a budgie leaves a gram or two, a cockatiel a few grams and a large macaw enough for a small keepsake urn. Ask providers in New Zealand whether they use a tray so tiny remains can be recovered.
How much does bird cremation cost in New Zealand?
Birds fall into a provider's smallest weight band, so private cremation in New Zealand usually costs about what a small cat's would. Big-city providers may charge more for collection; rural ones may add mileage. You can often save by bringing your bird in yourself. Ask for an itemized written total.
How long do pet birds live?
Much longer than many owners expect, but often less than the records. The Association of Avian Veterinarians gives median captive life expectancies of about 5.5 years for budgies, 9 for cockatiels and African greys and 21 for blue-and-gold macaws. Birds are considered senior from around 6 (budgies) to 30 (macaws), which is a good time to plan aftercare.
Is cremation common in New Zealand?
For people, about 69%[1] of deaths in New Zealand end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among bird keepers, cremation is common for indoor birds, especially in apartments and rentals, while backyard hens are still often buried on the property.
Can I bury my bird at home in New Zealand?
Often yes, with conditions such as depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Towns and homeowner associations can be stricter than wider rules. Don't bury a bird that may have died of an infectious disease until your vet agrees, and if you might move, consider cremation.
