What should your bird's cremation cost?
US price guides start their lowest band at communal $45-75; private $100-175[1], and a bird falls at the bottom of it. Enter your bird and your country to see a fair range, including the extras that quietly push totals up.

Using the calculator
How to use the bird cremation cost calculator
- Species. Bird is preselected on this site. Leave it, or switch if you're pricing another pet.
- Weight. Use the kg setting for birds: a budgie is about 0.035 kg, a cockatiel about 0.09 kg, an African grey about 0.45 kg and a pet hen 2 kg or more.
- Type of cremation. Communal (nothing returned), partitioned (shared chamber, kept apart), private (alone) or witnessed (you can be present).
- Country. US, UK, Canada, Australia or somewhere else. The first four use local prices in local currency; somewhere else shows US prices in dollars as a guide.
- Extras. Tick any of the five on offer: home or vet pickup, after-hours or weekend service, a paw print keepsake, an upgraded urn or at-home euthanasia.
The result updates as you type. You'll see a low-to-high total, a line-by-line breakdown and a side-by-side view of private versus communal for the same bird.
Behind the numbers
Where the calculator's prices come from
There's no national price survey for birds, so the calculator uses the smallest published weight band for each country. For the US that's CareCredit's band for pets up to 30 lb. PetMD's guidance, communal $50+; private $100+[2], agrees on the starting points. For the UK, the regulator's range of GBP 50 to GBP 300+[3] sets the frame, drawn from the CMA's appendix on cremation pricing. Any pet under 5 kg, a bird included, gets the same individual price as a cat there, from £160 at independent crematoria to about £187 at large vet groups.
Extras are added from typical market ranges and labeled as such: home pickup about $50 to $150, after-hours about $75 to $200 and an upgraded urn about $50 to $300. Partitioned cremation is our estimate, set midway between communal and private, with Embrace Pet Insurance's published ranges listed as the reference. Witnessed is our estimate too, at 1.25 to 1.6 times private. The calculator doesn't price water cremation.
Worked examples
Two worked examples: a cockatiel and a macaw
A 90 g cockatiel in Ohio, private cremation, collected from the vet. The bird sits in the lowest US band, so the private cremation range is about $100 to $175. Vet collection is usually included when the clinic arranges it, so leave every extra unticked and the calculator shows $100 to $175.
A 1.1 kg blue-and-gold macaw in California, private, home pickup on a Sunday. Still the lowest weight band, but expect the upper end in a high-cost state. Home pickup and a weekend surcharge might add $125 to $350 between them, so the calculator shows a total of $225 to $530. Timing is where costs jump most. By our estimate, weekend rush cremation cost 6×[4] the weekday rush fee at one North Carolina provider, so if your macaw can wait in the fridge until Monday, it usually should.
| Line item | Cockatiel, Ohio | Macaw, California |
|---|---|---|
| Private cremation (lowest band) | $100 to $175 | $100 to $175 |
| Home or vet pickup | Via vet, often included | $50 to $150 |
| After-hours or weekend service | None | $75 to $200 |
| Container | Basic, included | Basic, included |
| Estimated total | $100 to $175 | $225 to $530 |

Interpreting the range
What your estimate means when you get a quote
If a quote falls inside the range, it's typical. If it's well above, ask what's included: a decorative urn, a certificate, a paw-print style keepsake designed for mammals, or a mandatory pickup fee. If it's well below, check that it's truly private and not communal or partitioned. UK owners now have a stronger footing: the CMA's final report on vet services requires practices to set out communal, individual and add-on prices. Our article on private versus communal cremation for birds helps you decide which line to compare.
Standard pet insurance rarely helps here. Embrace's summary of a typical policy is short: Euthanasia covered if medically necessary; cremation not covered by standard policy[5]. Some add-ons do pay: one US end-of-life add-on reimbursed up to $500, and Embrace's wellness add-on up to $650[6] toward cremation and keepsakes. Check whether your bird's policy includes anything similar.

Being honest about limits
What the calculator can't tell you
- Your local provider's actual price list, which can sit anywhere in or outside the range.
- Whether a provider near you uses a small tray for birds or offers truly private cremation.
- Necropsy fees, which are set by your vet and the diagnostic lab rather than the crematory.
- Currency movements or tax rules if you're outside the countries we have data for.
For the total picture, including a feather frame or pendant, move on to the memorial budget planner. If you're unsure whether private cremation is worth it for a small bird, the ashes weight estimator shows what would come home.

Next steps once you have a number
Write the range down, then ask one or two providers for a written total. Our article on comparing bird cremation quotes lists the line items to look for, and the services page explains what private, partitioned and communal mean for a bird.
Or let us do the asking. Send your bird's details and we'll email local prices you can hold against this estimate. For more context on how prices vary by region, see the locations hub. Our guide to micro-ash return explains what a small bird's container looks like, and the poll results show which options other keepers chose.

Questions people ask
Why does cremating a budgie cost as much as a small dog?
Because most of the cost is fixed: collection, identification, paperwork, running the chamber and preparing the return container. Price lists start at a minimum weight band, and a bird and a small dog both sit inside it. A few providers have a dedicated small-animal rate, so it's worth asking.
Is communal cremation much cheaper for birds?
Usually about half the private price or less. In the US lowest band, communal runs about $45 to $75 against $100 to $175 for private. For a very small bird the saving can feel worth it, especially if you keep feathers as the keepsake instead of ashes.
Does the calculator include euthanasia?
Not by default. Tick at-home euthanasia and, in the US, the calculator adds $325 to $750, the national at-home range for dogs, because no one publishes a figure for birds. Avian vets set their own fees, so dog and cat figures, such as the US in-clinic average of about $139 for a dog, are only a rough guide.
Can I use it for backyard chickens?
Yes. A hen usually weighs 1.5 to 3 kg, which is still in the lowest weight band. For several birds, run the calculator once per bird or ask providers for a combined price. Call your vet first if several birds died suddenly.
