For a single pet bird who died of old age or a known illness, the decisions are yours. Backyard flocks and aviaries are different: a cluster of sudden deaths may have to be reported to the animal health authority before any bird is buried or cremated. Here's the local picture for England.

Avian influenza is notifiable: if pet poultry or aviary birds die suddenly, report it to the Animal and Plant Health Agency before arranging cremation.
