Bird Cremation in Ireland: what to know
Bird keepers in Ireland face a few questions other pet owners don't: whether to find out why a bird died suddenly, how much remains a tiny body leaves and whether bird flu rules apply to a backyard flock. Below you'll find honest answers, published prices and links to local pages.
In Ireland, bird aftercare usually starts at the vet and ends with a very small container, a few feathers or a quiet grave. The details differ by city: how far the nearest crematorium is, what the smallest band costs and what the local rules say about burial. Choose your city below.

Why local cremation habits matter for your bird
Only 26.56%[1] of funerals in Ireland are cremations, so burial runs deep, and older relatives may be surprised you'd cremate a canary. That's all right. Explain the practical reasons, such as a rental home or a planned move, and invite them to help choose a feather or a spot for the container. Being included often softens a disagreement.
That Ireland rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
Norway shows how wide European prices can be: one crematorium lists communal cremation from NOK 1,190 and separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for the lightest band, with NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return[2][3]. A bird needs no rush. Around Ireland, ask for the standard return and spend the difference on a keepsake.
A German consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375[4]. A bird will sit at the bottom of those ranges. In Ireland, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually your first contact, but you can approach a pet crematorium directly for a clearer price.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from EUR 150 |
| Germany (all pets) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Netherlands (dogs, average) | about EUR 200 | about EUR 300 |

Before you dig or scatter in Ireland
For a single pet bird who died of old age or a known illness, the decisions are yours. Backyard flocks and aviaries are different: a cluster of sudden deaths may have to be reported to the animal health authority before any bird is buried or cremated. Here's the local picture for Ireland.
In Ireland, individual cremation for the smallest pets is widely available; one crematorium lists a price from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg, which covers almost every bird. Avian influenza is notifiable, so sudden deaths in backyard poultry or aviary birds should go to your vet or the Department of Agriculture before any aftercare is arranged.
What to do when your bird dies in Ireland
- Book a quiet appointment. When euthanasia is what your avian vet recommends, request the earliest or latest time they offer; the waiting room is quieter then.
- Settle aftercare beforehand. Choose between private and communal cremation and let the clinic know ahead of time, so you won't be handed paperwork afterwards.
- Choose what to keep now. You can collect molted feathers from the cage before you go, or ask the vet afterwards to snip a few feathers and take off the leg band.
- Bring something familiar, a cage towel or the perch they like best, to help your bird feel settled while you hold them.
- Decide whether a flockmate comes along. Some keepers bring a bonded partner in a carrier; others prefer to show them the body at home.
- Leave when you're ready. Staff will store your bird in their cooler until collection day.
Keeping your bird close
A garden stone is a simple marker for a bird buried in Ireland or for remains placed in a pot. By our estimate, engraved pet garden stones start at ~$39[6]. Some keepers paint their own instead, using the bird's colors, or press a feather into wet cement for a stepping stone. Any of these works indoors on a shelf, too.

Questions people ask
When will my bird's ashes come back in Ireland?
By our estimate, a typical window across the markets we cover is 3 to 14 days, though some providers are faster and some take several weeks. In rural parts of Ireland, where the nearest crematory may be hours away, allow longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether remains can be posted.
Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in Ireland?
Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.
Do crematories in Ireland handle very small birds carefully?
Most can, but practice varies. Ask what they place a tiny body on during cremation, whether the chamber is cleared between animals and what container they return. Providers who cremate birds regularly will answer without hesitation. If one seems unsure, try another before you book.
How much ash will my bird leave?
Very little. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a budgie leaves a gram or two, a cockatiel a few grams and a large macaw enough for a small keepsake urn. Ask providers in Ireland whether they use a tray so tiny remains can be recovered.
Can I get a necropsy for my bird in Ireland?
Usually, through your vet, who sends the body to a diagnostic lab. Keep your bird refrigerated, not frozen, and call within a day or two. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.
