Bird Cremation in Thailand: what to know

Many pet crematoria in Thailand see birds only occasionally, so ask how they manage tiny bodies before booking. This page gathers the questions, published price examples and rules that matter for birds, from budgies to backyard hens.

Pet birds are kept across Thailand, from budgies and cockatiels in city flats to hens in back gardens and parrots who share decades with a family. This page covers what aftercare for all of them costs, the local rules worth knowing and every city we cover in Thailand.

The local attitude to cremation and burial

In Thailand, about 80.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That figure is about people, not birds, but it shapes the local market: more crematories, more competition and more providers willing to talk through options. Use that to your advantage. Ask two of them how they cremate a small bird, and go with the one whose answer is clearest.

We take the Thailand percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

How much to budget for a bird in Thailand

Pet funeral customs in Asia are often more elaborate than in the West. In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[2], while a Singapore columbarium lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a small pet under 5 kg[3]. Ask exactly what's included before you compare prices in Thailand.

In Tokyo, one pet memorial park charges JPY 14,300 for communal and JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[4], and every pet bird fits that band. Prices around Thailand will differ, but the pattern of a smallest-pet band with optional ceremony holds across much of the region.

Before you dig or scatter in Thailand

Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Thailand.

A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird

  1. If a sitter calls while you're away, ask them to put on gloves, bag your bird and place the bag at the back of the fridge.
  2. Phone your vet from wherever you are. Explain who is caring for the birds and ask whether they can take your bird in.
  3. Protect the other birds. Have the sitter keep the room calm and warm, and check that the remaining birds are eating and their droppings look normal.
  4. Don't agree to anything by text you haven't read. There's no rush; the clinic can keep your bird chilled until you're back to sign.
  5. Once you're back, choose the kind of cremation and whether a necropsy is worthwhile.
  6. Thank the sitter. Discovering a dead pet is upsetting for the person who found them, and they'll want to hear how it ended.

Remembering your bird in Thailand

Many families keep a favorite perch, toy or cage cover on display for a while, then pass the cage and supplies to a local bird rescue when they're ready. A donation in your bird's name to a parrot rescue or avian welfare group can turn a hard week into something that helps another bird.

If Thailand is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Can I get a necropsy for my bird in Thailand?

Usually, through your vet, who sends the body to a diagnostic lab. Keep your bird refrigerated, not frozen, and call within a day or two. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.

Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in Thailand?

Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.

Who handles suspected bird flu in Thailand?

Most countries treat avian influenza in poultry and kept birds as a reportable disease. Contact a vet or the national animal health authority before moving, burying or cremating birds that died suddenly, and keep the bodies bagged and cool in the meantime.

Is cremation common in Thailand?

For people, about 80.0%[1] of deaths in Thailand end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among bird keepers, cremation is common for indoor birds, especially in apartments and rentals, while backyard hens are still often buried on the property.

Can I bury my bird at home in Thailand?

Often yes, with conditions such as depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Towns and homeowner associations can be stricter than wider rules. Don't bury a bird that may have died of an infectious disease until your vet agrees, and if you might move, consider cremation.

When will my bird's ashes come back in Thailand?

By our estimate, a typical window across the markets we cover is 3 to 14 days, though some providers are faster and some take several weeks. In rural parts of Thailand, where the nearest crematory may be hours away, allow longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether remains can be posted.
