Free tools for planning your bird's aftercare
Birds are weighed in grams, and most pet aftercare calculators assume a dog. These seven tools are set up with birds in mind, so the numbers you see make sense for a finch, a cockatiel or a macaw.
- Sized for birds, from finch to macaw
- No sign-up and no details needed
- Every price range shows its source

How much comes home
Ashes weight estimator: how much will there be?
This is the question bird keepers ask most, and the one most crematory staff answer vaguely. Enter your bird's species and body weight and the estimator applies the published rule that remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[1], then adds a plain-English comparison, such as "about the weight of a paper clip".
Use it before deciding between private and communal cremation. Seeing that a canary may leave well under a gram can change what you want to pay for, or push you toward saving feathers instead. The full estimator page explains the math and its limits.

Choosing a container
Urn size calculator: avoid buying something far too big
Most online urns are sized for cats and dogs. A 20 cubic inch "small" urn would hold the ashes of more than a dozen African greys. The calculator uses the standard allowance of about one cubic inch per pound of body weight plus a small margin, which for birds usually lands under 3 cubic inches.
It also shows keepsake volumes if you want to keep a little aside. One industry report puts personalized urns at USD 50–1,000+[2], so knowing the right size first saves money. Try the urn size calculator with your bird's weight. Size matters for price in a less obvious way too. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost ~1.34×[3] the price of a full-size wooden urn from the same crematory, so a tiny urn isn't automatically the cheap option.

Cremation cost calculator: a realistic range for your bird
Choose bird as the species, enter a weight, then pick communal, partitioned, private or witnessed and your country. The calculator starts from published small-pet price bands, such as the US band of communal $45-75; private $100-175[4], and adds typical ranges for pickup and other extras you check.
It can't know your local provider's actual price, but it tells you whether a quote is in the normal range. See the cost calculator page for worked examples with a cockatiel and a macaw.

Weighing it up
Aftercare options compared: cremation, burial or water
Slide the priorities that matter to you (cost, keeping ashes, environmental impact, speed, having a ceremony) and the tool ranks private cremation, communal cremation, water cremation, home burial and pet cemetery burial. Embrace lists US ranges of communal $30-200; private $100-500+[5], and the tool shows each option's range alongside its pros and cons.
For bird keepers the interesting result is often home burial, which ranks high when cost and ceremony matter but drops if you rent or might move. Details are on the options comparison page. If water cremation is new to you, the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance's aquamation explainer describes the process in plain terms.

Pet age calculator: where your parrot is in its life
Parrot ages are hard to judge. A 20-year-old cockatiel is elderly, while a 20-year-old macaw is around the typical figure for its species: blue-and-gold macaws have a median captive life expectancy of 21 years[6], according to the Association of Avian Veterinarians' senior parrot guide. The calculator places your bird on a life-stage scale using published veterinary guidance.
geriatric >15 yr (African grey)[7]
The age calculator page covers why records like 80-year-old cockatoos are the exception, and what to plan once your bird reaches its senior years.

Memorial budget planner: add it all up in one place
The cremation is usually only part of the spend. A necropsy, pickup, a tiny urn, a feather shadowbox or a pendant can each add to the total. The planner lists the usual items with editable low and high amounts and keeps a running range you can copy or print.
Interest in memorials is high. One industry report gives the shares of owners interested in personalized memorials and of those who see memorializing as significant as 51% / 70%[8]. The budget planner page has a sample bird budget to start from, and when you're ready, send us your details for local prices.

Putting them together
A sensible order for using the bird tools
- Ashes weight estimator first, because the likely amount often decides private versus communal.
- Aftercare options comparison next, if you're still weighing burial or water cremation.
- Cremation cost calculator to see a fair range for the option you picked.
- Urn size calculator and ashes sharing planner once you know ashes are coming home.
- Memorial budget planner last, to add everything up before you talk to a provider.
If your bird is still with you and you're planning ahead, start with the age calculator instead. None of the tools replace an avian vet's advice or a written quote, but together they mean you'll recognize a fair offer when you see one. Our bird aftercare guides go deeper on each topic. When you want real prices rather than ranges, the services page explains each option and our local pages show what changes by area. Two good companions to the tools are what happens during a bird cremation and how to read a bird cremation quote.

Questions people ask
Do the tools work for birds under 100 grams?
Yes. Enter the weight in kilograms (a budgie is about 0.035 kg) or as a decimal of a pound, and the results scale down accordingly. For very small birds such as finches, the results come with a note that real returned amounts vary and can be hard to measure.
Are the prices in the calculators accurate for my town?
They're ranges built from published national price guides, not local quotes. They tell you whether a price you've been given is typical, high or low. For actual prices near you, send us your location and we'll email the options we find.
Do I have to enter any personal details?
No. The tools run in your browser and don't ask for your name, email or location. Nothing you type into them is sent to us. Only the contact form sends information, and only when you choose to submit it.
Which tool should I start with?
If you're deciding between private and communal cremation, start with the ashes weight estimator, because the answer often settles the question. If you've already chosen private, the urn size calculator and ashes sharing planner are the next useful steps.
