Bird Cremation in Belgium: what to know
In Belgium, bird aftercare usually starts at the vet and ends with a very small container, a few feathers or a quiet grave. The details differ by city: how far the nearest crematorium is, what the smallest band costs and what the local rules say about burial. Choose your city below.
Bird keepers in Belgium face a few questions other pet owners don't: whether to find out why a bird died suddenly, how much remains a tiny body leaves and whether bird flu rules apply to a backyard flock. Below you'll find honest answers, published prices and links to local pages.

Burial or cremation? How Belgium tends to decide
Cremation and burial both have deep roots in Belgium, where about 67.98%[1] of people are cremated. Bird keepers reflect that mix: some bury a canary under a rosebush, others choose a private cremation for an Amazon who lived thirty years. Neither is more proper. What matters is what you'll want to hold, or visit, a year from now.
We take the Belgium percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, and a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250[2], similar to an individual cremation. For a bird, some families near Belgium combine the two: cremate, then place the small container in a shared urn field. Ask the cemetery whether it takes urns from other providers.
Europe keeps about 48.2 million[3] ornamental birds, but few crematoria publish bird-only prices. Some do list a band for the smallest pets: an Irish crematorium quotes individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[4]. Ask providers serving Belgium whether they have a similar small-animal price.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from EUR 150 |
| Germany (all pets) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Netherlands (dogs, average) | about EUR 200 | about EUR 300 |

Rules worth knowing in Belgium
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Belgium.
Your next few days, in order
- Let the flockmate say goodbye when two birds were close. Give them a short time beside the body, then wash your hands.
- Save something of them: a few tail or wing feathers, a molted feather from the cage, a recording of their whistle.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly. We can also send you options that serve your area.
- Arrange drop-off or collection for whenever works for you, and tell them what kind of bird it is so a small tray is ready.
- Ask for written confirmation of a private cremation whenever you're expecting ashes to come home.
- Plan where the remains will go only once you feel ready. Nothing forces the decision; the little container can stay near the perch indefinitely.
Small, lasting ways to honor a bird
Long-lived parrots leave long stories. Some families write a short life story of their bird: the year they came home, the words they learned, the people they loved and disliked. Kept with a photo and a feather, it becomes a record for children who may not remember the bird who was there when they were born.

Questions people ask
How long do pet birds live?
Much longer than many owners expect, but often less than the records. The Association of Avian Veterinarians gives median captive life expectancies of about 5.5 years for budgies, 9 for cockatiels and African greys and 21 for blue-and-gold macaws. Birds are considered senior from around 6 (budgies) to 30 (macaws), which is a good time to plan aftercare.
Can I bury my bird at home in Belgium?
Often yes, with conditions such as depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Towns and homeowner associations can be stricter than wider rules. Don't bury a bird that may have died of an infectious disease until your vet agrees, and if you might move, consider cremation.
How many communities do you cover in Belgium?
We currently have local bird cremation guides for 3 communities in Belgium, including Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how to reach an avian-aware provider.
Do crematories in Belgium handle very small birds carefully?
Most can, but practice varies. Ask what they place a tiny body on during cremation, whether the chamber is cleared between animals and what container they return. Providers who cremate birds regularly will answer without hesitation. If one seems unsure, try another before you book.
Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in Belgium?
Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.
Do winters in Belgium affect burying a bird?
In the colder parts of Belgium, frozen ground can make digging impossible for weeks or months. Many keepers freeze a small bird until the thaw, or cremate and bury the remains later. In Belgium, one of the coldest places we cover, winter lows average about °F.
