Bird Cremation in France: what to know
In France, most families arrange a bird's cremation through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria. You can almost always contact a crematorium directly too. For a bird that's often easiest, because a small body is simple to bring in yourself and you can ask about small-animal handling face to face.
Pet birds are kept across France, from budgies and cockatiels in city flats to hens in back gardens and parrots who share decades with a family. This page covers what aftercare for all of them costs, the local rules worth knowing and every city we cover in France.
We cover 21 communities in France, from Paris, Marseille and Lyon to smaller towns.

How France thinks about cremation
Because cremation is less common locally (44.91%[1] of people in France), fewer providers compete for small-pet work. That can mean less choice on price and on keepsakes. Ask what containers are included, and remember you can purchase a tiny vial elsewhere if the standard urn is far too big.
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) publishes the France rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
Norway shows how wide European prices can be: one crematorium lists communal cremation from NOK 1,190 and separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for the lightest band, with NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return[2][3]. A bird needs no rush. Around France, ask for the standard return and spend the difference on a keepsake.
Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, and a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250[4], similar to an individual cremation. For a bird, some families near France combine the two: cremate, then place the small container in a shared urn field. Ask the cemetery whether it takes urns from other providers.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from EUR 150 |
| Germany (all pets) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Netherlands (dogs, average) | about EUR 200 | about EUR 300 |

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in France
Scattering a bird's ashes is rarely regulated in the way people fear, because the amount is so small. Burial is where rules bite: property ownership, leases, homeowners' associations and disease controls. Below is what applies in France, plus the office to call if you're unsure.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération individuelle or collective; only individual cremation returns your bird's remains. Backyard poultry keepers are expected to declare their birds to the mairie, and sudden deaths in a flock should be reported to a vet or the departmental veterinary services before burial or cremation. Ask for the price of the smallest weight band.
Step by step: from the cage floor to the urn
- Take a breath. If you found your bird on the cage floor with no warning, you haven't missed something obvious. Birds hide illness well.
- Put on gloves if you have them, or scrub your hands once you're done. Fold a paper towel gently around your bird and settle them in a clean bag or small box.
- Decide about a necropsy now. If you might want to know why your bird died, refrigerate; don't freeze. If you're sure you don't, either is fine.
- Save feathers and the leg band now, while your bird is still with you. Once the cremation is done, neither can be got back.
- Check the birds left behind for fluffed feathers, tail bobbing or changed droppings, and call your avian vet if anything looks wrong.
- Choose private or communal cremation; if you want ashes back, find out how a body this small is recovered.
- Get the total in writing, including collection and the container, before your bird leaves your care.
Ideas for remembering a bird who talked, sang or simply watched
Many families keep a favorite perch, toy or cage cover on display for a while, then pass the cage and supplies to a local bird rescue when they're ready. A donation in your bird's name to a parrot rescue or avian welfare group can turn a hard week into something that helps another bird.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in France?
We currently have local bird cremation guides for 21 communities in France, including Paris, Marseille and Lyon. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how to reach an avian-aware provider.
Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in France?
Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.
How much ash will my bird leave?
Very little. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a budgie leaves a gram or two, a cockatiel a few grams and a large macaw enough for a small keepsake urn. Ask providers in France whether they use a tray so tiny remains can be recovered.
Who handles suspected bird flu in France?
Most countries treat avian influenza in poultry and kept birds as a reportable disease. Contact a vet or the national animal health authority before moving, burying or cremating birds that died suddenly, and keep the bodies bagged and cool in the meantime.
Can I get a necropsy for my bird in France?
Usually, through your vet, who sends the body to a diagnostic lab. Keep your bird refrigerated, not frozen, and call within a day or two. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.
What should I do if my bird dies in the heat?
Wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and refrigerate them straight away; small bodies warm fast. In hot parts of France, such as France where summer highs average about °F, move any surviving birds somewhere cooler and watch them closely.
