Saying goodbye to your bird in Shanghai

Shanghai, China

How bird keepers in Shanghai usually handle a loss

Shanghai's summers are hot and very humid, with the plum rain season in early summer and typhoons possible later on. In that weather, a pet's body must be cooled within hours: wrap it in a towel with ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the air-conditioning on. Winters are damp and chilly rather than freezing, which buys a little time, but it's still wise to arrange collection promptly.

Pet aftercare in Shanghai has become well established, with private cremation, farewell rooms and memorial keepsakes all widely available. Compare what's included: whether you can be present, how the ashes are returned and how long it takes. Many families keep the ashes at home at first, then decide later whether to keep them, scatter them or place them in a memorial park.

Parrot and finch shows, bird fairs and club meetings in the Shanghai area are a good place to ask about aftercare before you need it. Experienced keepers tend to be frank about which clinics handle small bodies well and which labs give clear necropsy reports. That word-of-mouth knowledge is worth more than a glossy website, especially for a species most crematories see only now and then.

About 24,870,000 people live in Shanghai.

50%[1]

China's cremation rate passed 50% for the first time in 2019.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial or cremation? How China tends to decide

About 50%[1] of people in China are cremated, a share that has climbed steadily. Pet aftercare has moved the same way, especially among people in apartments and rentals who can't bury a pet at home. For bird keepers, that has made private cremation for very small animals easier to find than it was a generation ago.

The China figure comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Heat, cold and drafts in Shanghai

Whatever the weather in Shanghai, a small bird's body needs cool storage within a few hours. Keep a couple of zip bags and paper towels somewhere you can find them, so a hard moment doesn't turn into a search through the kitchen drawers.

How much to budget for a bird in Shanghai

In Tokyo, one pet memorial park charges JPY 14,300 for communal and JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[5], and every pet bird fits that band. Prices around Shanghai will differ, but the pattern of a smallest-pet band with optional ceremony holds across much of the region.

The full price table by size is on our China page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in China

Bird flu has changed what's expected of backyard keepers in China. A single elderly hen is still your own business, but unexplained losses among several birds can trigger reporting duties, and officials may then choose how the carcasses are dealt with. Here's what to know before you bury or cremate.

The first day, step by step

  1. If a sitter calls while you're away, talk them through it: gloves on, your bird into a bag, and the bag onto a back shelf of the refrigerator.
  2. Phone your vet from wherever you are. Explain who is caring for the birds and ask whether they can take your bird in.
  3. Protect the other birds. Ask the sitter to watch the survivors' food and droppings and to keep the room warm and quiet.
  4. Don't agree to anything by text you haven't read. There's no rush; the clinic can keep your bird chilled until you're back to sign.
  5. Once you're back, pick private or communal cremation, and decide whether a necropsy makes sense.
  6. Thank the sitter. Discovering a dead pet is upsetting for the person who found them, and they'll want to hear how it ended.

Small, lasting ways to honor a bird

Shanghai is one of the world's biggest cities, and most pets live in apartment towers or older lane houses with shared stairways and no garden. Home burial isn't practical for most families, so cremation is the norm. When you ask for options, give your district and building details, including whether there's a lift and where a car can stop, so collection can be arranged without fuss.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in China?

For people, yes: about 50%[1] of China deaths end in cremation, according to Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Shanghai follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is a necropsy worth it for my bird?

It's most worth it when other birds share your home or aviary. A necropsy can identify infections, toxins such as zinc or overheated non-stick fumes, and conditions that could affect the survivors. It has to happen before cremation, so talk to your avian vet within a day or two and keep your bird refrigerated meanwhile.

Is it safe to handle my bird's body?

Usually, with simple care. Wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly, avoid shaking feathers near your face and keep other birds away from the body. Some infections, such as psittacosis, can pass from birds to people, so if several birds are ill, call your vet before handling them.

Can I arrange a bird cremation outside office hours in Shanghai?

Emergency clinics in a city this size can usually store your bird overnight or through a weekend, then pass them to a crematory. There's rarely a need to pay for after-hours collection for a bird: refrigerated and bagged, a small body is fine for a day or two.

What happens if my bird dies while I'm away from Shanghai?

Ask the sitter or boarding service to chill your bird, bagged and labeled, then phone your vet so the clinic can take over storage. Nothing needs deciding until you return. Tell the clinic in writing that no disposal should happen without your approval. When you're back, you can choose between private and communal cremation calmly.

How is a bird's cremation different from a dog's or cat's?

The process is the same, but the scale changes everything. A bird's bones are light and many are hollow, so very little remains. Good providers use a tray or small dish so remains aren't lost, and return them in a container sized for grams. Ask how they handle small bodies before you book.
