Bird Cremation in the United Arab Emirates: what to know

Pet birds are kept across the United Arab Emirates, from budgies and cockatiels in city flats to hens in back gardens and parrots who share decades with a family. This page covers what aftercare for all of them costs, the local rules worth knowing and every city we cover in the United Arab Emirates.

Bird keepers in the United Arab Emirates face a few questions other pet owners don't: whether to find out why a bird died suddenly, how much remains a tiny body leaves and whether bird flu rules apply to a backyard flock. Below you'll find honest answers, published prices and links to local pages.

We cover 4 communities in the United Arab Emirates, from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to smaller towns.

What local funeral habits say about pet birds

Wherever you live, cremation for pet birds has become more common as more people keep birds indoors in homes without gardens. In the United Arab Emirates, ask whoever handles your bird three things: is it private, how are tiny remains recovered and what container will they come back in?

Bird cremation prices for the United Arab Emirates keepers

Whatever the local price, the same questions apply in the United Arab Emirates: is the cremation individual, how are very small remains recovered, and what's the total including collection and container? A bird's remains weigh only 3-5% of body weight[1], so a tiny container is enough.

Bird cremation is available in and around the United Arab Emirates, though the number of providers varies. In the UAE, shared cremation for a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900[2], which gives a sense of how the smallest band is priced in the region. Ask for a written quote in local currency.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in the United Arab Emirates

If your bird was a protected or licensed species, such as some native parrots, there may be paperwork to close after a death. For ordinary pet species, the rules in the United Arab Emirates are mostly about where remains may go. Here's a short summary, with links to the official detail.

In the UAE, Dubai Municipality states that burying animals is not permitted, so cremation is the usual route for pet birds. Shared cremation for a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900; separate (individual) cremation costs more. Ask for the price in writing and how the remains will be returned.

A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird

  1. Book a quiet appointment. If your avian vet has advised euthanasia, ask for the first or last slot of the day, when the clinic is calmer.
  2. Settle aftercare beforehand. Choose between private and communal cremation and let the clinic know ahead of time, so you won't be handed paperwork afterwards.
  3. Choose what to keep now. You can collect molted feathers from the cage before you go, or ask the vet afterwards to snip a few feathers and take off the leg band.
  4. Bring something familiar, a cage towel or the perch they like best, to help your bird feel settled while you hold them.
  5. Decide whether a flockmate comes along. Some keepers bring a bonded partner in a carrier; others prefer to show them the body at home.
  6. Leave when you're ready. Your bird stays in the clinic's cooler until the provider comes to collect.

Keeping your bird close

Many families keep a favorite perch, toy or cage cover on display for a while, then pass the cage and supplies to a local bird rescue when they're ready. A donation in your bird's name to a parrot rescue or avian welfare group can turn a hard week into something that helps another bird.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

How much ash will my bird leave?

Very little. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a budgie leaves a gram or two, a cockatiel a few grams and a large macaw enough for a small keepsake urn. Ask providers in the United Arab Emirates whether they use a tray so tiny remains can be recovered.

How many communities do you cover in the United Arab Emirates?

We currently have local bird cremation guides for 4 communities in the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how to reach an avian-aware provider.

Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in the United Arab Emirates?

Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.

How long do pet birds live?

Much longer than many owners expect, but often less than the records. The Association of Avian Veterinarians gives median captive life expectancies of about 5.5 years for budgies, 9 for cockatiels and African greys and 21 for blue-and-gold macaws. Birds are considered senior from around 6 (budgies) to 30 (macaws), which is a good time to plan aftercare.

How much does bird cremation cost in the United Arab Emirates?

Birds fall into a provider's smallest weight band, so private cremation in the United Arab Emirates usually costs about what a small cat's would. Big-city providers may charge more for collection; rural ones may add mileage. You can often save by bringing your bird in yourself. Ask for an itemized written total.

What should I do if my bird dies in the heat?

Wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and refrigerate them straight away; small bodies warm fast. In hot parts of the United Arab Emirates, such as the United Arab Emirates where summer highs average about °F, move any surviving birds somewhere cooler and watch them closely.
