Bird Cremation in Indonesia: what to know
If several birds have died suddenly in Indonesia, phone a vet or the government's animal disease line before any crematorium. For a single pet bird, the choices are yours, and the city pages below explain them in local terms.
Pet birds are kept across Indonesia, from budgies and cockatiels in city flats to hens in back gardens and parrots who share decades with a family. This page covers what aftercare for all of them costs, the local rules worth knowing and every city we cover in Indonesia.

Burial or cremation? How Indonesia tends to decide
We don't have a published cremation figure for Indonesia, but the decision rarely depends on local habit anyway. It comes down to what you want to keep, whether you own land, and whether your bird's death raises any health questions for the others. Start with those three and the right choice usually becomes clear.
The real bill for a small bird, line by line
Across much of Asia, communal pet cremation costs roughly half as much as higher-tier individual services[1]. For a small bird in Indonesia, decide first whether you want remains returned, then ask whether a ceremony, columbarium niche or container is bundled into the price.
In Japan, over 60% of people in one survey preferred an individual pet funeral, against just over 10% for a joint one[2]. By our estimate, a communal cremation at a Tokyo memorial park costs 4.8x[3] the ward's collection fee, so the step up is modest. Prices around Indonesia follow a similar pattern.
| Place | Example | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 communal / JPY 22,000 individual | Tax included |
| Tokyo, Shinjuku City collection | JPY 3,000 | Communal; ashes not returned |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | HKD 1,300 individual | Basic package |
| Singapore (small pet under 5 kg) | SGD 160 communal / SGD 280 private | Columbarium niches extra |

What the law says about a pet bird in Indonesia
Most rules that touch bird aftercare in Indonesia were written with dogs, cats or livestock in mind, but they apply to birds too. The ones worth knowing cover home burial, scattering ashes on public land and reporting suspected bird flu in poultry or aviary birds.
A calm checklist for the next 48 hours
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Say the bird has died, use that word, and avoid phrases like "went to sleep".
- Let them see the bird if they want to, tucked into a soft cloth. For many children this is comforting, but never push a child who would rather not.
- Give them a job: choosing a feather to keep, drawing a picture, or picking where the container will sit.
- Keep your bird refrigerated while the family decides between a small burial and cremation.
- Explain what cremation means without jargon: the bird's body becomes a little soft ash, and that ash comes back to the family.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Let your child feel the loss for a while, and when another bird comes up, let them help decide.
Small, lasting ways to honor a bird
If your bird talked, write down every word and phrase they knew, and who taught them. It becomes a family record. Some people have a favorite phrase engraved on a keepsake container, or framed beside a photo. Browse more ideas in our guides, and see what other keepers chose in our poll results.
