In the Netherlands, most families arrange a bird's cremation through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria. You can almost always contact a crematorium directly too. For a bird that's often easiest, because a small body is simple to bring in yourself and you can ask about small-animal handling face to face.

Why local cremation habits matter for your bird
About 68.37%[1] of people in the Netherlands are cremated, a share that has climbed steadily. Pet aftercare has moved the same way, especially among people in apartments and rentals who can't bury a pet at home. For bird keepers, that has made private cremation for very small animals easier to find than it was a generation ago.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
Norway shows how wide European prices can be: one crematorium lists communal cremation from NOK 1,190 and separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for the lightest band, with NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return[2][3]. A bird needs no rush. Around the Netherlands, ask for the standard return and spend the difference on a keepsake.
Europe keeps about 48.2 million[4] ornamental birds, but few crematoria publish bird-only prices. Some do list a band for the smallest pets: an Irish crematorium quotes individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[5]. Ask providers serving the Netherlands whether they have a similar small-animal price.

Burial, scattering and bird flu rules in the Netherlands
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, pet crematoria offer individual (individuele) and collective cremation, and several pet insurers reimburse part of the cost, so check your policy. Avian influenza is taken very seriously in Dutch poultry areas: if backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, call your vet before arranging aftercare. For an indoor bird, ask for the smallest-pet price.
A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird
- Remove the bird from the aviary as soon as you can, gloved, and seal them in a bag.
- Look for a pattern. Write down when it happened, which species, and whether the other birds show anything odd, like puffed-up feathers or loose droppings.
- Call your vet if more than one bird is unwell, and raise the question of a necropsy: what it finds in this bird might save the rest.
- Decide how you want small birds handled. Many aviary keepers choose communal cremation for finches and keep a feather or two.
- If one bird was special, say so: a private cremation for a single canary is perfectly reasonable.
- Clean feeders and water dishes, then walk the aviary looking for any gap a rodent or wild bird could squeeze through.
- Keep a simple log of losses through the year; it helps your vet spot trends.
Small, lasting ways to honor a bird
Planting something that draws wild birds is a gentle memorial for a bird keeper. A flowering shrub, a feeder by the window or a small birdbath in a the Netherlands garden or balcony brings birdsong back into the home. Who handles suspected bird flu in the Netherlands?
Most countries treat avian influenza in poultry and kept birds as a reportable disease. Contact a vet or the national animal health authority before moving, burying or cremating birds that died suddenly, and keep the bodies bagged and cool in the meantime.
Do crematories in the Netherlands handle very small birds carefully?
Most can, but practice varies. Ask what they place a tiny body on during cremation, whether the chamber is cleared between animals and what container they return. Providers who cremate birds regularly will answer without hesitation. If one seems unsure, try another before you book.
Do winters in the Netherlands affect burying a bird?
In the colder parts of the Netherlands, frozen ground can make digging impossible for weeks or months. Many keepers freeze a small bird until the thaw, or cremate and bury the remains later. In the Netherlands, one of the coldest places we cover, winter lows average about °F.
What should I do if my bird dies in the heat?
Wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and refrigerate them straight away; small bodies warm fast. In hot parts of the Netherlands, such as the Netherlands where summer highs average about °F, move any surviving birds somewhere cooler and watch them closely.
Can I get a necropsy for my bird in the Netherlands?
Usually, through your vet, who sends the body to a diagnostic lab. Keep your bird refrigerated, not frozen, and call within a day or two. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.
When will my bird's ashes come back in the Netherlands?
