The local attitude to cremation and burial
Cremation accounts for around 83.0%[1] of deaths in the United Kingdom, and scattering ashes is a familiar ritual here. Rules worth knowing in the United Kingdom
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in the United Kingdom.
The UK has about 1.4 million[3] indoor pet birds and around 900,000[7] domestic fowl kept as pets, so bird aftercare is more common here than many people think. Avian influenza is notifiable: if pet poultry or aviary birds die suddenly, report it to the Animal and Plant Health Agency before arranging cremation. For a single indoor bird, the CMA's 2026 remedies mean your vet should be able to show you prices for communal and individual cremation.
A calm checklist for the next 48 hours
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Say the bird has died, use that word, and avoid phrases like "went to sleep".
- Let them see the bird if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth. Many children find it helps; don't insist if they don't.
- Give them a job: they might pick out a feather to save, make a drawing, or decide which shelf the container goes on.
- Keep your bird refrigerated until everyone has agreed whether it will be a garden burial or a cremation.
- Explain what cremation means without jargon: the bird's body becomes a little soft ash, and that ash comes back to the family.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Give your child time to miss them, and involve them in deciding if and when.

How much ash will my bird leave?
Very little. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a budgie leaves a gram or two, a cockatiel a few grams and a large macaw enough for a small keepsake urn. Ask providers in the United Kingdom whether they use a tray so tiny remains can be recovered.
