Saying goodbye to your bird in Madrid

Madrid, Spain

Pet birds in Madrid: the local picture

Many Madrid families remember their pet in a sunny balcony corner, the shade of an inner courtyard, or the Retiro, Casa de Campo or the riverside park along the Manzanares. Scattering ashes on public land usually needs permission, so plenty of families keep the ashes at home or take them to the mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama, or to a family village elsewhere in Spain where the pet spent summers.

Most madrileños live in apartment buildings, often older blocks with small lifts and inner courtyards, and few have gardens. Burying a pet in parks or other public land isn't permitted, so cremation is the usual choice, arranged through a vet or directly with a provider on the city's outskirts. Home collection is common for families without a car. Share your barrio and building details when you ask for options.

Big cities like Madrid tend to have bird clubs, parrot rescues and specialist bird shops, and the people in them know the local landscape. They can usually tell you which avian vets see birds at weekends, which crematories return small-bird remains in a vial rather than an oversized urn, and which labs take necropsy cases. A quick question in a club group often saves a lot of phoning around.

Madrid is home to about 3,223,000 people.

For a second opinion on price, Valladolid (101 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Madrid routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial or cremation? How Spain tends to decide

In Spain, 50.11%[1] of the dead are cremated, so most families know someone who has chosen either path. Ask them what they valued afterwards. People who buried often mention having a place to visit; people who cremated often mention being able to keep someone close through a move. Both apply to a pet bird.

Source for the Spain number: Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Madrid, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

What Madrid's seasons mean for your bird's aftercare

Seasonal changes affect when people choose to scatter or plant a memorial, not whether cremation works. Remains stay stable indoors for years, so choose a day that suits the family around Madrid rather than the calendar.

The real bill for a small bird, line by line

A German consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375[5]. A bird will sit at the bottom of those ranges. In Madrid, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually your first contact, but you can approach a pet crematorium directly for a clearer price.

What the law says about a pet bird in Spain

There's no special licence or form for cremating one pet bird in Spain. What you do need to think about is the land: whose it is, what's under it and who might dig there later. And if birds have been dying without explanation, the first rule is to let a vet decide what happens next.

In Spain, pet crematoria offer individual (incineración individual) and collective cremation, and most arrangements go through the vet. Canaries and other songbirds are widely kept; ask for the smallest weight band and whether a tray is used for tiny remains. If several birds die suddenly, contact a vet before burying or cremating them.

A calm checklist for the next 48 hours

  1. Take a breath. If you found your bird on the cage floor with no warning, you haven't missed something obvious. Birds hide illness well.
  2. Put on gloves if you have them, or scrub your hands once you're done. Fold a paper towel gently around your bird and settle them in a clean bag or small box.
  3. Decide about a necropsy now. Freezing makes an examination harder, so use the fridge if there's any chance you'll want answers. If you're certain you won't, either works.
  4. Save feathers and the leg band before anything else happens. They can't be recovered after cremation.
  5. Check the birds left behind for one sitting puffed up, a tail that bobs with each breath or droppings that have changed, and ring your avian vet if you see any of it.
  6. Choose private or communal cremation, and ask the provider how they recover very small remains.
  7. Get the total in writing, including collection and the container, before your bird leaves your care.

Ideas for remembering a bird who talked, sang or simply watched

Madrid's summers are hot and dry, often topping 35°C in July and August, while winters are cold, with frosty nights. In summer, cool your pet's body quickly using a towel, ice packs and the coolest room in the flat. In winter you have a little more time, but arranging collection within a day or two is still wise, especially in an apartment with central heating.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Spain?

For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Madrid follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can I be present at my bird's cremation in Madrid?

Some crematories allow it, usually for an extra fee, and a few have a small viewing room. For a small bird, many families prefer a private goodbye at the clinic or at home before collection. If watching matters to you, ask when you book whether the chamber can be viewed and whether a separate room is available.

How is a bird's cremation different from a dog's or cat's?

The process is the same, but the scale changes everything. A bird's bones are light and many are hollow, so very little remains. Good providers use a tray or small dish so remains aren't lost, and return them in a container sized for grams. Ask how they handle small bodies before you book.

Is private cremation worth it for a very small bird?

It depends on what you want to keep. If having your bird's own remains matters, even a gram in a vial can mean a lot. If what you'll treasure is something you can see and hold, communal cremation plus feathers saved beforehand costs less and may give you more to keep.

Can I bury my bird in my garden in Spain?

In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.

Does my landlord or residents' association in Madrid have a say in burying a bird?

Often, yes. Leases and homeowners' or residents' association rules can ban digging in shared or landscaped areas, and many don't mention pets at all, so ask first. Cremation sidesteps the issue, and a small container can go wherever you move. If you'd still like a grave, a large planter on a patio is a gentle alternative.
