Plan the whole cost of saying goodbye to your bird

A private cremation in the lowest US band runs communal $45-75; private $100-175[1], but that's rarely the full bill. This planner puts the common extras on one list, so the total holds fewer surprises.

  • Every line editable, low and high
  • Lower the urn line to keepsake size

Using the planner

Building your bird's memorial budget line by line

The planner opens with a checklist of ten common items, with private cremation and an urn already checked. Check the others you expect, clear the rest, and adjust the low and high amounts on any line. The running total updates as you go, and you can copy or print the summary to share with family or keep for yourself.

Start with the essentials, cremation and any collection fee, then add keepsakes. It's often easier to see the total first and then decide which extras matter, rather than agreeing to each one separately on the phone.

What's in it

The items a bird keeper might include

Costs a bird keeper might face, and how each fits the planner
ItemTypical starting rangeIn the planner
Private cremation$100 to $175Preset line, checked; CareCredit's US band for pets up to 30 lb
Communal cremation (instead)$45 to $75No separate line; type this range over the private cremation amounts
Pickup or transport$50 to $150Preset line, typical add-on range
After-hours collectionOften $75 to $200 extraNo separate line; raise the pickup amounts to include it
Urn$50 to $300Preset line, checked; lower it for a keepsake-size urn
NecropsyAsk your avian vetNo line; type the vet's quote into a spare line such as Farewell or service
Feather shadowbox or frameYour own figureNo line; use Memorial stone or plaque if you won't buy a stone
Pendant or ring$50 to $300Preset line (Cremation jewelry); varies by maker and metal

Embrace Pet Insurance's published ranges, communal $30-200; private $100-500+[2], show how wide the market is. One industry report says personalized urns alone run USD 50–1,000+[3]. For a bird you'll almost always be at the small end of the urn range, because keepsake sizes are all you need. Engraving is a line people forget: by our estimate, adding a name and dates to a mid-priced wooden urn raises its price by about 36%[4], and on a keepsake-size urn the share can be higher still.

Worked example

A sample budget for an African grey

Here's how one plan might look for a 450 g African grey who died suddenly at home, with the owner wanting answers first and a few keepsakes after. The planner has no necropsy or frame line, so those go into spare lines.

  • Necropsy through the avian vet: the vet's quote, typed into the unused Farewell or service line.
  • Private cremation, collected from the lab: $100 to $175, the preset line.
  • Brass keepsake urn instead of the basic container: the Urn line, with the high amount lowered to $100.
  • Two pendants for the owner's children: the Cremation jewelry line, with both pendants' prices from the maker's list added together.
  • Feather shadowbox, made at home with a craft-store frame: a modest figure in the Memorial stone or plaque line.

Before the necropsy and pendants, the known lines come to roughly $150 to $275. Seeing that early helps the owner decide whether the second pendant or a framed shadowbox matters more, without making that choice under pressure.

Who pays

Will insurance cover any of your bird's memorial costs?

Usually not, unless you bought a specific add-on. Standard pet policies tend to cover euthanasia when medically necessary but not cremation. Some US end-of-life add-ons do pay out. Lemonade's terms were $500 limit; $3.75/month[5], and Figo's Extra Care Pack offered up to $250; $6.62/month[6], in both cases toward cremation or burial costs.

Check your bird's policy wording for "end of life", "final expenses" or "memorial". If there's a limit, subtract it from the planner's total to see what you'll actually pay.

Pairs, aviaries and hens

Budgeting when more than one bird is involved

If two bonded birds die close together, or you keep a small flock of pet hens, enter the combined cost on the single private cremation line (the planner has one, and you can't add another) and then ask providers whether they offer a combined price. Some charge per bird; others price a shared private cremation by total weight, which can cost less if you're happy for the ashes to be mixed. Our pet chicken cremation guide explains how providers usually price hens.

For aviary keepers, it can help to set a standing budget in advance, since losses come one at a time over years. A simple rule, such as communal cremation for most birds and private cremation for particularly special ones, keeps decisions calmer. Our notes on caring for flockmates after a loss cover the birds left behind.

Being honest about limits

What the budget planner can't know

Default amounts are national ranges or typical add-on figures, not quotes. Necropsy and framing have no line of their own, and the jewelry range is broad, so type in your own figures. Taxes and shipping aren't included, and switching currency doesn't convert the US starting amounts.

For the cremation line, the cost calculator gives a tighter range for your country and extras. If you're unsure whether you need an urn at all, the ashes weight estimator shows how much will come home.

Once you have a total

Turning your budget into a plan

Print or copy the summary and keep it with your bird's vet records, especially if you're planning ahead for an older parrot. Our planning page suggests what else to note down, and memorial ideas for bird owners has low-cost keepsakes that don't need a budget line at all. Some support costs nothing at all: the Tufts Pet Loss Support Helpline and Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline are free to call if the days after a loss feel heavy.

When you're ready to swap estimates for real numbers, send us your details and we'll email local prices. The services page explains what's included in each option. Prices differ by region too, which our local pages cover.

Questions people ask

What's a realistic total for a small bird's aftercare?

With communal cremation and a homemade feather keepsake, often under $100. With private cremation, pickup and a keepsake urn, commonly $150 to $400 in the US. A necropsy, jewelry or after-hours collection can each add more, which is why listing everything helps.

Is there a free way to memorialize a bird?

Yes. Save feathers in a simple frame, keep a recording of their voice, plant something where you can see it from their old cage spot, or hang a feeder for wild birds. Garden burial on land you own also costs nothing beyond your time.

Should I include euthanasia in the budget?

If it's planned, yes. Avian vets set their own fees, and at-home visits cost more than clinic appointments. Ask your vet for a quote, tick the clinic or at-home euthanasia line, and type the quote over the starting amounts. Some insurance policies cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary.

Can I save or share my budget?

You can copy the summary or print it. The planner runs in your browser and doesn't store your figures on our servers, so copy it somewhere safe if you want to come back to it later.
