How big an urn does your bird really need?

Ashes weigh about 3-5% of body weight[1], which for a budgie or cockatiel adds up to less than a teaspoon. This calculator turns your bird's weight into a volume so you don't buy an urn ten times too large.

  • Volume in cubic inches and milliliters
  • Keepsake and sharing volumes included
  • Tuned for tiny amounts, not dog-size urns

Urn size calculator

Enter your pet's healthy adult weight. We size the urn using the industry rule of 1 cubic inch per pound, plus 10% room to spare.

Recommended urn size

1.1 cu in (18 mL)

Look for: Small (up to 20 cu in)

Urn volume breakdown
Total ashes (by volume)1 cu in (16 mL)
Expected ash weight0.48 oz–0.8 oz
Urn with 10% margin1.1 cu in (18 mL)

Standard sizes: small up to 20, medium up to 60, large up to 120 and extra large 200+ cubic inches. If you're between sizes, choose the larger one. Very small pets can return only a spoonful of ashes, so a keepsake-sized urn is often enough.

Using the calculator

Three inputs, one answer: using the urn calculator

  1. Your bird's weight. Choose kg and enter a decimal: 0.035 for a budgie, 0.45 for an African grey, 1.1 for a large macaw.
  2. How many people are sharing. Set 1 if one urn will hold everything, or up to 8 if relatives each want a portion.
  3. Keepsakes. Tick this if each person wants a keepsake urn. The tool allows about 3 cubic inches per keepsake, which is more than most birds return, so for a small bird the keepsakes can take all of the ashes and the tool will say no main urn is needed.

The result shows the main urn volume in cubic inches and milliliters, a suggested size category, the expected ash weight and the volume of any keepsakes. It recalculates the moment you change a number, so you can try a few scenarios quickly.

The math

The one-cubic-inch-per-pound rule, applied to birds

Urn makers size containers with a simple allowance: one cubic inch of space for every pound of body weight. The calculator adds a 10% margin so the lid closes comfortably. The allowance is generous on purpose, since remains are dense and they settle, and it lines up with the published rule that ashes weigh a few percent of body weight.

For a dog that rule gives familiar numbers, like 66 cubic inches for a 60 lb Labrador. For birds it produces figures most urn catalogs never list. A budgie works out at under a tenth of a cubic inch (the tool rounds it to 0.1), which is about 1 to 1.5 mL, roughly a quarter of a teaspoon.

Worked examples

Urn volumes for four real-world birds

Bird and weightVolume neededIn millilitersWhat to look for
Budgie, 35 g (0.08 lb)About 0.1 cu inAbout 1 mLGlass vial, locket or pendant
African grey, 450 g (1 lb)About 1.1 cu inAbout 18 mLKeepsake urn, 1 to 2 cu in

Pet hen, 2.5 kg (5.5 lb)About 6 cu inAbout 100 mLExtra-small urn, 6 to 10 cu in

Take the African grey. At about a pound, the calculator suggests roughly 1.1 cubic inches, a little more than a tablespoon. Many keepsake urns hold 2 to 3 cubic inches, so one of those gives plenty of room and space for a folded note or a small feather.

Beyond volume

Choosing a bird urn once you know the size

Urns are big business: one market report valued the global cremation urn market at about USD 2.1 billion[2] in 2024, and the same firm says urns earned 40%+[3] of pet memorial product revenue in 2023. That means lots of choice, much of it designed for dogs. Filter for keepsake sizes first and you'll skip most of the catalog.

  • Seal. Tiny amounts of fine ash escape easily, so look for a threaded lid or screw plug.
  • Feather space. Some keepsakes have a glass front for a single feather beside the ashes.
  • Travel. Parrot owners move house over decades; a small metal urn survives packing better than glass.
  • Sharing. Sets of matching mini-urns suit families splitting a large parrot's ashes.

One industry report puts personalized urns at USD 50–1,000+[4], and a keepsake size is usually toward the low end. Our guide to urn sizing and selection for birds goes through materials in more detail. Material drives price more than size here. By our estimate, marble pet urns cost ~3×[5] as much as ceramic ones, a gap that holds across a price guide and a crematory price list, so a small ceramic keepsake is often the practical choice.

Being honest about limits

What the urn calculator doesn't know

The rule is a rough average for mammals; for comparison, a study of 100 commercial human cremations found adult remains averaged about 3.5% of body weight. Bird skeletons are lighter for their size, so real volumes may come in at or below the figure shown. The calculator also can't account for how finely a provider processes remains, or whether a very small bird's ash is fully recoverable.

If you'd rather check the weight side first, the ashes weight estimator gives grams instead of volume. When a provider returns your bird's ashes in a temporary container, you can move them into the urn yourself or ask the provider to do it.

What to do next

From a number to an urn on the shelf

Note the volume, then shop keepsake sizes or ask your provider what they include. If several people want a share, use the ashes sharing planner before buying anything. For ideas that go beyond an urn, see memorial ideas for bird owners.

If you haven't arranged the cremation yet, tell us about your bird and mention the urn you have in mind. Some providers will return the ashes directly into it. The services page explains what each type of cremation returns. It's also fair to ask whether the operator holds a CANA pet cremation certification. Our local pages show what's available near you, and keepsakes and jewelry after bird cremation covers pieces that hold only a pinch.

Questions people ask

Can I use a cat urn for my parrot?

You can, but it will look mostly empty. Cat urns are usually 10 to 20 cubic inches, while even a large macaw needs about 3. Some people like the extra space for feathers, a leg band or a note. If you want the ashes to fill the container, choose a keepsake size.

What's the smallest urn for a finch?

A glass vial, a cremation locket or a pendant holds the fraction of a gram a finch typically leaves. Look for pieces rated at about 0.05 cubic inches. Some providers return tiny remains already sealed in a vial, so ask before buying a separate container.

Do I need space for feathers inside the urn?

Only if you want them together. Feathers are bulky compared with bird ashes and can fade or crush in a sealed urn. Many keepers prefer a separate shadowbox for feathers and a small urn for the ashes, displayed side by side.

Why does the calculator add 10%?

Ashes can be slightly more voluminous than predicted, and a full-to-the-brim urn is hard to seal. The margin gives room for the lid to close without spilling. With birds the extra is tiny in absolute terms, a fraction of a teaspoon for most species.
