Santa Monica, California
Pet birds in Santa Monica: the local picture
The beach, the palisades above the ocean and the city's many parks are part of how Santa Monica residents live with their pets. The fires in the neighboring Pacific Palisades in early 2025 also touched many local families, and some lost pets or homes. Whatever your situation, private cremation with the ashes returned gives you time to decide on a memorial, whether at home or somewhere by the sea.
Santa Monica's ocean breeze keeps the climate mild all year, with August highs around 79F and February lows near 51F, and the marine layer often keeps early summer gray and cool. That gives you slightly more time than inland, but a pet's body should still be kept cool: wrap it in a towel, add ice packs and keep it in a shaded room. On rare heat-wave days, act more quickly.
Around Santa Monica, the feed store often knows more local chicken keepers than any vet does. For aftercare, though, the vet is usually the link, since many rural crematories receive small animals through clinics. If you'd rather deliver your bird yourself, phone the crematory directly; many will agree a drop-off time, and it avoids a mileage charge on top of a small-bird fee.
Santa Monica is home to about 90,082 people, the 84th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Los Angeles, roughly 14 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Santa Monica run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Culver City (5 miles), Beverly Hills (6 miles) and West Hollywood (8 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Santa Monica too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Burial or cremation? How California tends to decide
Cremation is so routine in California, with a human cremation rate near 70.5%[1], that the questions shift from whether to how. For birds, the how is everything: does the provider use a tray, is the chamber cleared between animals, and who signs the paperwork? A provider who answers those plainly usually does the rest well.
That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Santa Monica only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons in Santa Monica and a small body
Mild winters in Santa Monica mean fewer heating hazards, but people still light candles, bake and use aerosols more around the holidays. If a bird dies suddenly in the cooler months, run through what was new in the house that week. It could matter for any birds still with you.
Even in Santa Monica's mild climate, the warmest weeks around August deserve care, because birds overheat faster than most people realize. After a death on a warm day, don't leave your bird's body in a car or on a windowsill. A cool room for an hour, then the refrigerator, is plenty.

What bird cremation costs in Santa Monica
Small doesn't always mean cheap. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost ~1.34×[5] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same crematory. Ask whether you can decline the standard urn and purchase a tiny vial elsewhere. Our urn size calculator shows how little space a bird's remains need.
The full price table by size is on our California page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What California allows for pet birds
There's no special licence or form for cremating one pet bird in California. What you do need to think about is the land: whose it is, what's under it and who might dig there later. And if birds have been dying without explanation, the first rule is to let a vet decide what happens next.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Santa Monica's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first day, step by step
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Say the bird has died, use that word, and avoid phrases like "went to sleep".
- Let them see the bird if they want to, tucked into a soft cloth. For many children this is comforting, but never push a child who would rather not.
- Give them a job: choosing a feather to keep, drawing a picture, or picking where the container will sit.
- Keep your bird refrigerated until everyone has agreed whether it will be a garden burial or a cremation.
- Explain what cremation means in plain words: the body is turned into a small amount of soft ash that comes home.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Give your child time to miss them, and involve them in deciding if and when.
Ideas for remembering a bird who talked, sang or simply watched
Santa Monica is a dense beach city on the western edge of Los Angeles County, about 14 miles from downtown LA, and most residents rent apartments rather than own houses. Parking is tight, many buildings have shared garages or no elevator, and traffic can be slow. When you ask for pet aftercare, give your building details, floor, elevator access and parking, so a collection can be arranged around the realities of your street.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Santa Monica actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Los Angeles, about 14 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Santa Monica and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Santa Monica page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Santa Monica?
The closest communities we cover are Culver City (about 5 miles), Beverly Hills (about 6 miles) and West Hollywood (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Santa Monica too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Santa Monica climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 79°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How is a bird's cremation different from a dog's or cat's?
The process is the same, but the scale changes everything. A bird's bones are light and many are hollow, so very little remains. Good providers use a tray or small dish so remains aren't lost, and return them in a container sized for grams. Ask how they handle small bodies before you book.
How long does it take to get my bird's remains back?
Often one to two weeks, sometimes sooner in a large city. In smaller towns where birds travel to a regional crematory, it can take longer. Because a bird's remains are so small and light, some providers can post them with tracking. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
