San Diego, California
Pet birds in San Diego: the local picture
San Diego is spread across mesas and canyons, from beach towns to inland suburbs, and a drive from Oceanside to Chula Vista or from Point Loma to Escondido can take a long time. Most pets live in single-family homes or apartments. Say which community you live in when you request options, because mileage often shapes the pickup fee and how soon ashes come back.
The City of San Diego separates dead-animal removal by location: city streets and public rights-of-way, county roads and unincorporated areas, private property, and state highways each follow different routes. Removal from private property carries a fee, and the city asks residents not to put dead animals in trash or recycling bins. None of those routes is a private cremation, so for your own pet's ashes, book one with a vet or pet crematory.
Big cities like San Diego tend to have bird clubs, parrot rescues and specialist bird shops, and the people in them know the local landscape. They can usually tell you which avian vets see birds at weekends, which crematories return small-bird remains in a vial rather than an oversized urn, and which labs take necropsy cases. A quick question in a club group often saves a lot of phoning around.
San Diego's population is around 1,406,106, the 2nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Chula Vista (7 miles), Lemon Grove (7 miles) and La Mesa (9 miles) are close enough that their providers cover San Diego routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

The local attitude to cremation and burial
With about 70.5%[1] of people cremated, California is a place where urns on shelves are ordinary. Bird keepers here often follow the same pattern: a private cremation, a small container at home and a few feathers framed beside it. Because nobody needs convincing about cremation itself, your conversation with a provider can focus on the details that matter for birds, like recovering tiny remains and confirming the cremation is truly private.

Heat, cold and drafts in San Diego
If you keep birds outdoors near San Diego, the changing seasons bring wild birds through, and with them a small risk of disease reaching a coop or aviary. Several sudden deaths close together are a reason to call a vet before arranging anything else.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
Some San Diego keepers weigh cremation against a pet cemetery. By our estimate, whole-body burial of a small pet costs ~$350[5] at the median of posted US price lists, more than double the private cremation band. Freeze-drying a small bird costs more again, about $650–$1,350[6] at one studio. Cremation is usually the least expensive way to keep something.

What California allows for pet birds
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in California.
For what San Diego itself says, see City of San Diego Get It Done. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately. The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in San Diego.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in San Diego, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Your next few days, in order
- Ask the clinic to pause. When a bird dies under treatment or on the operating table, make it clear nothing should go for disposal before you've chosen.
- Request the notes. A brief written account of events will be useful if you decide on a necropsy or want another vet's view later.
- Decide on a necropsy within a day or two. Ask that your bird stays chilled, not frozen, in the meantime.
- Confirm private cremation in writing if you want remains returned, and ask which crematory the clinic uses.
- Settle the bill separately. Treatment and aftercare are often itemized apart; ask for both before you leave.
- Arrange to collect the remains in person when the clinic calls, or check whether they can go in the post.
Remembering your bird in San Diego
San Diego's coast is mild, with August highs around 71°F and no freezing months, so there is usually a little time to think after a pet dies at home. Inland valleys run much hotter in summer, and fall Santa Ana winds can bring heat and wildfire risk. Keep your pet in a cool room with cool packs wrapped in towels. Many homes sit on hillsides or canyon lots that make backyard burial difficult.

Questions people ask
Why does the San Diego page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from San Diego?
Usually yes. Chula Vista is about 7 miles away, Lemon Grove is about 7 miles away and La Mesa is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is private cremation worth it for a very small bird?
It depends on what you want to keep. If having your bird's own remains matters, even a gram in a vial can mean a lot. If what you'll treasure is something you can see and hold, communal cremation plus feathers saved beforehand costs less and may give you more to keep.
My parrot is old. Should I plan ahead?
It helps. Decide now who would take your parrot if they outlive you, and write down your wishes for aftercare: private or communal, feathers to keep, which vet to call. Some parrots live for decades, so a plan written years ahead is not morbid, just practical.
Can I bury my bird in my garden in California?
In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.
What should I do if my backyard hens start dying suddenly?
Stop and call your vet or your state veterinarian's office before moving, burying or cremating any birds. Bird flu has hit backyard flocks across the US, and official rules may decide how the bodies are handled. Wear gloves, keep the survivors away from the dead birds and don't bring visitors to the coop.
