Rules on burial and scattering in California were mostly written with larger animals and people in mind. For a bird, the practical points are simple: ask the landowner, keep away from water supplies and don't bury anything that might carry disease. The details for California follow.

The first day, step by step
- Check the rest of the flock first. If other hens look unwell or have also died, call a vet before touching anything else.
- Move her somewhere cool and secure, out of reach of dogs, cats and foxes, in a sealed bag.

Memorials that suit a bird
The city's Animal Care Services can collect animals found on public property, with separate conditions and fees for private property. Its standard route is communal cremation, with ashes scattered at sea, and it does not offer an individual cremation. That can feel fitting for a coastal city, but if you want your pet's ashes back, you will need to arrange a private cremation yourself, usually through your vet or a pet cremation provider serving the Long Beach area.
