Pet birds in Antwerp: the local picture
Antwerp is compact and busy, with narrow townhouses in Zurenborg and Borgerhout, converted warehouses on Het Eilandje and apartment blocks across Berchem and Linkeroever. Plenty of residents cycle or take the tram and do not own a car, so having a pet collected from home is often the practical route. Give the provider your floor, whether the building has a lift, and whether a van can stop outside on a busy street.
Most aftercare in Antwerp is arranged in Dutch, though many providers are comfortable in English and French, and the city's large international community means that is often needed. Ask for the quote in your preferred language so nothing gets lost. Check whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or communal, and whether collection and an urn are included.
Traffic across Antwerp can turn a short trip into an hour, which is one reason many keepers here hand the whole job to their vet. That works well, but it pays to say exactly what you want: private or communal, feathers set aside, the leg band returned. Clinics that send dozens of cats and dogs a week to the same crematory may tick the default box unless your wishes are on the form.
About 523,000 people live in Antwerp, which makes it the largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover.
Our pages for Brussels (26 miles, a larger centre) and Ghent (32 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Antwerp as well.

Why local cremation habits matter for your bird
About 67.98%[1] of people in Belgium are cremated, a share that has climbed steadily. Pet aftercare has moved the same way, especially among people in apartments and rentals who can't bury a pet at home. For bird keepers, that has made private cremation for very small animals easier to find than it was a generation ago.
The Belgium percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Antwerp, not as a count of pets.
Heat, cold and drafts in Antwerp
Cremated remains aren't affected by weather, so there's no rush to scatter or bury them. Many bird keepers wait for a calm, dry day, sometimes the anniversary of the day their bird first came home.

Bird cremation prices for Antwerp keepers
Europe keeps about 48.2 million[5] ornamental birds, but few crematoria publish bird-only prices. Some do list a band for the smallest pets: an Irish crematorium quotes individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[6]. Ask providers serving Antwerp whether they have a similar small-animal price.

What the law says about a pet bird in Flanders
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in Flanders.
Step by step: from the cage floor to the urn
- Ask the clinic to pause. When a bird dies under treatment or on the operating table, make it clear nothing should go for disposal before you've chosen.
- Request the notes. A brief written account of events will be useful if you decide on a necropsy or want another vet's view later.
- Decide on a necropsy within a day or two. Until then, ask the clinic to keep your bird in the fridge rather than the freezer.
- Confirm private cremation in writing when you're expecting ashes back, and find out the name of the crematory the clinic sends to.
- Settle the bill separately. The cost of care and the cost of cremation usually appear as separate items; get both figures first.
- Arrange to collect the remains in person when the clinic calls, or check whether they can go in the post.
Memorials that suit a bird
Antwerp's mild, often grey weather means a death at home seldom forces a hurried decision. Lay your pet somewhere cool, on a blanket, away from radiators and sunny windows, and on a warm day add wrapped cold packs. That leaves time for a partner or children to come home and say goodbye, and to ring your vet, who can explain local options and whether they offer cremation through the practice.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Antwerp?
Usually yes. Brussels is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Belgium attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Belgium human cremation rate at about 67.98%[1]. We show it on the Antwerp page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can I keep my bird's feathers?
Yes, and many keepers treasure them most. Feathers must be taken before cremation, so choose a few from the tail or wings, or gather molted ones from the cage. If an infection was suspected, wait until your vet has ruled it out before handling feathers from the body.
Can I be present at my bird's cremation in Antwerp?
Some crematories allow it, usually for an extra fee, and a few have a small viewing room. For a small bird, many families prefer a private goodbye at the clinic or at home before collection. If watching matters to you, ask when you book whether the chamber can be viewed and whether a separate room is available.
Can I arrange a bird cremation outside office hours in Antwerp?
Emergency clinics in a city this size can usually store your bird overnight or through a weekend, then pass them to a crematory. There's rarely a need to pay for after-hours collection for a bird: refrigerated and bagged, a small body is fine for a day or two.
How do I explain my budgie's death to a young child?
Use simple, true words: your bird has died and won't wake up. Avoid "put to sleep" or "went away", which can frighten or confuse small children. Let them ask questions, look at the bird if they wish and help choose a keepsake. Children often grieve in short bursts, so expect questions to come back days or weeks later.
