Bird Cremation in Flanders: what to know
Children in Flanders often meet death for the first time through a budgie, finch or hen. Aftercare is a chance to show them it can be handled with care. Our city pages include steps written with families in mind, as well as advice on burial, cremation and keeping a feather or two.
The biggest difference across Flanders is access to avian vets. Birds are a small share of most clinics' work, so keepers outside the main cities often rely on a general practice for the practical steps and phone a specialist for advice. That's fine for aftercare: any vet can confirm a death, refrigerate your bird and pass them to a crematory.

How Flanders thinks about cremation
Cremation and burial both have deep roots in Flanders, where about 67.98%[1] of people are cremated. Bird keepers reflect that mix: some bury a canary under a rosebush, others choose a private cremation for an Amazon who lived thirty years. Neither is more proper. What matters is what you'll want to hold, or visit, a year from now.

Bird cremation prices for Flanders keepers
Norway shows how wide European prices can be: one crematorium lists communal cremation from NOK 1,190 and separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for the lightest band, with NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return[2][3]. A bird needs no rush. Around Flanders, ask for the standard return and spend the difference on a keepsake.
A German consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375[4]. A bird will sit at the bottom of those ranges. In Flanders, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually your first contact, but you can approach a pet crematorium directly for a clearer price.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |

What the law says about a pet bird in Flanders
Rules for pets after death are set locally, and for birds there's one extra layer: animal health rules for poultry and other birds kept outdoors. A lone budgie is simple. Several dead hens in a week is not, and a call to your vet or the animal health authority comes first. Here's what applies in Flanders.
A calm checklist for the next 48 hours
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Say the bird has died, use that word, and avoid phrases like "went to sleep".
- Let them see the bird if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth. Many children find it helps; don't insist if they don't.
- Give them a job: choosing a feather to keep, drawing a picture, or picking where the container will sit.
- Keep your bird refrigerated while the family decides between a small burial and cremation.
- Explain what cremation means in plain words: the body is turned into a small amount of soft ash that comes home.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Give your child time to miss them, and involve them in deciding if and when.
Keeping your bird close
A bird's voice is often what people miss most. Go back through old phone videos for the whistles, words or the doorbell impression, and save the audio somewhere safe. Some families turn a favorite clip into a sound file they can play on the anniversary, or print a QR code for a memorial frame.

Questions people ask
What should I do if my bird dies in the heat?
Wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and refrigerate them straight away; small bodies warm fast. In hot parts of Flanders, such as Flanders where summer highs average about °F, move any surviving birds somewhere cooler and watch them closely.
Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in Flanders?
Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.
Can I get a necropsy for my bird in Flanders?
Usually, through your vet, who sends the body to a diagnostic lab. Keep your bird refrigerated, not frozen, and call within a day or two. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.
How long do pet birds live?
Much longer than many owners expect, but often less than the records. The Association of Avian Veterinarians gives median captive life expectancies of about 5.5 years for budgies, 9 for cockatiels and African greys and 21 for blue-and-gold macaws. Birds are considered senior from around 6 (budgies) to 30 (macaws), which is a good time to plan aftercare.
Do crematories in Flanders handle very small birds carefully?
Most can, but practice varies. Ask what they place a tiny body on during cremation, whether the chamber is cleared between animals and what container they return. Providers who cremate birds regularly will answer without hesitation. If one seems unsure, try another before you book.
Do winters in Flanders affect burying a bird?
In the colder parts of Flanders, frozen ground can make digging impossible for weeks or months. Many keepers freeze a small bird until the thaw, or cremate and bury the remains later. In Flanders, one of the coldest places we cover, winter lows average about °F.
