Tulsa, Oklahoma
What bird aftercare is like in Tulsa
Tulsa summers are hot, with July highs in the mid-90s, and winters bring occasional ice storms that can shut roads for days. In summer, keep your pet cool straight away, indoors with ice packs, and never in a car or garage. If an ice storm delays collection, a cold room or insulated cooler at home will hold things safely until roads are clear.
Tulsa is a city of single-family homes, from older brick houses in Maple Ridge and around Brookside to newer subdivisions in the south and east, with apartment complexes in between. Many homes have yards, and some on the edges sit on larger lots. When you ask for options, give your full address and mention any gate. Most Tulsa vets arrange cremation, so the clinic is an easy first call.
If your parrot is elderly and still with you, Tulsa is a good place to plan ahead calmly. Ask your avian vet which crematory they use, what a private cremation costs for your bird's weight and whether feathers or the leg band can be set aside first. Writing those answers on a card by the cage means nobody has to guess on a difficult day.
About 416,209 people live in Tulsa, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 26 Oklahoma communities we cover.
Families in Tulsa often end up using a provider from Sand Springs (8 miles), Jenks (11 miles) and Sapulpa (13 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
58.6%[1]
The NFDA projected Oklahoma's cremation rate at 58.6% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep pet birds.
1.4 million[3]
There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Oklahoma thinks about cremation
In Oklahoma, 58.6%[1] of the dead are cremated, so most families know someone who has chosen either path. Ask them what they valued afterwards. People who buried often mention having a place to visit; people who cremated often mention being able to keep someone close through a move. Both apply to a pet bird.
That Oklahoma rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Tulsa only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Tulsa weather, birds and timing
Seasons like Tulsa's make a two-step goodbye common: cremation now, then a small scattering or planting when the weather is kind. Keep the remains indoors at room temperature in the meantime; heat and cold don't affect them. A spring morning or a calm autumn evening often feels right.
Because Tulsa swings from about 94°F in July to freezing nights in January, February and December, a backyard grave dug in one season can look very different in another. Frost heave can lift a shallow burial and summer storms can wash soil away. Many keepers here choose cremation first, then bury a sealed container, which stays put.

Bird cremation prices for Tulsa keepers
Small doesn't always mean cheap. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost ~1.34×[5] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same crematory. Ask whether you can decline the standard urn and purchase a tiny vial elsewhere. Our urn size calculator shows how little space a bird's remains need.

What Oklahoma allows for pet birds
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in Oklahoma.
Tulsa's own guidance is published by City of Tulsa Refuse & Recycling; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation. The official Oklahoma local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Tulsa.
Start with the Oklahoma rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Tulsa's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
The first day, step by step
- Remove the bird from the aviary promptly and bag them, wearing gloves.
- Look for a pattern. Note the date, the species and anything unusual, such as fluffed birds or wet droppings among the rest.
- Call your vet if more than one bird is unwell, and ask whether a necropsy on this bird could protect the others.
- Decide how you want small birds handled. Many aviary keepers choose communal cremation for finches and keep a feather or two.
- If one bird was special, say so: a private cremation for a single canary is perfectly reasonable.
- Clean feeders and water dishes and check the aviary for gaps where wild birds or rodents could get in.
- Keep a simple log noting each loss and its date; over a year it shows your vet any trend.
Ideas for remembering a bird who talked, sang or simply watched
Tulsa's public services can collect deceased animals from streets and from private residences when the animal is placed at the curb. They ask for the animal to be in a bag or box, with a precise location or directions. That is a disposal service rather than a cremation, so if you want your pet's ashes back or a more personal farewell, arrange a private cremation through your vet or a provider.

Questions people ask
How do Oklahoma attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Oklahoma human cremation rate at about 58.6%[1]. We show it on the Tulsa page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Tulsa?
Usually yes. Sand Springs is about 8 miles away, Jenks is about 11 miles away and Sapulpa is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Tulsa's weather affect bird aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Tulsa, with average highs around 94°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I get any ashes back from a budgie or finch?
Usually a little, but not much. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a 35 g budgie leaves a gram or two, and a finch may leave less. Ask whether the provider uses a tray or dish for small bodies so the remains can be recovered, and expect a vial or tiny container.
Could a space heater have caused my bird's death?
It's possible. Some heaters, self-cleaning ovens and non-stick cookware release fumes when overheated that are toxic to birds, and deaths often cluster in the heating season. A necropsy can help confirm it. Refrigerate your bird, call your avian vet and ventilate the house to protect any surviving birds.
Is freeze-drying an option for a pet bird near Tulsa?
Yes, a few US studios freeze-dry small birds, typically for about $650 to $1,350, and it takes months. It's much more expensive than cremation and not for everyone. If you're considering it, keep your bird frozen, not refrigerated, and contact a studio before you book any cremation, because the choice can't be reversed.
