Arranging a parrot or bird cremation in Savannah
From finches to macaws to backyard hens, bird aftercare in Savannah has a few quirks: very little ash, feathers worth saving and, sometimes, a necropsy to protect the flock.

Savannah, Georgia
Who helps with a pet bird's aftercare around Savannah
Savannah's high water table and low-lying ground make home burial harder than in many places, and some yards flood after heavy rain. Private cremation, with your pet's ashes returned, is a practical choice for many families here. Communal cremation costs less and returns no ashes. If you'd like to scatter ashes at the beach or on the marsh, check the rules for that place first.
Heat and humidity dominate pet aftercare in Savannah, with July highs in the low 90s and warm, sticky nights. If your pet dies at home, act quickly: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs around the body and keep it in an air-conditioned room. Hurricane season runs June through November, and evacuations or flooding can disrupt services, so ask your vet about cold storage if the weather turns.
Pigeon lofts and poultry clubs are active around Savannah, and their members often have long-standing arrangements with a vet or a crematory. If you keep show birds or racers, ask the club secretary who they use. A shared provider who knows the birds and the routine can make a hard week simpler, and may offer a lower rate for members.
With roughly 149,440 residents, Savannah is the 5th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Pooler (10 miles), Port Wentworth (10 miles) and Bluffton (13 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Savannah routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Burial or cremation? How Georgia tends to decide
With about 54.2%[1] of people cremated in Georgia, cremation is now the majority choice but not the only one people expect, and relatives may have strong views either way. For a bird it can help to take the decisions one at a time: whether to keep feathers, whether to find out why your bird died, and only then whether to bury or cremate.
The Georgia percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Savannah, not as a count of pets.
Savannah weather, birds and timing
Planning ahead in Savannah's heat: if you're booking euthanasia for an elderly bird in July, choose a morning appointment and ask whether the clinic can keep your bird refrigerated until the crematory collects. Driving a small body home in a hot car and back again is stressful and easy to avoid.
If your parrot's cage stands near a window, Savannah's summer sun can turn that corner into an oven by mid-afternoon. After a loss, move the remaining birds somewhere shaded and cooler, which is good practice through June, July, August and September anyway. A sudden death on a hot day is also a reason to consider a necropsy if other birds share the room.

Bird cremation prices for Savannah keepers
Small doesn't always mean cheap. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost ~1.34×[5] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same crematory. Ask whether you can decline the standard urn and purchase a tiny vial elsewhere. Our urn size calculator shows how little space a bird's remains need.

What Georgia allows for pet birds
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in Georgia.
To find your county or city office in Georgia, start with the official Georgia local government directory.
The Georgia page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Savannah's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do when your bird dies in Savannah
- Book a quiet appointment. If your avian vet has advised euthanasia, ask for the first or last slot of the day, when the clinic is calmer.
- Settle aftercare beforehand. Decide on private or communal cremation and tell the clinic in advance, so there are no forms to fill in afterwards.
- Choose what to keep now. Ask the vet to trim a few feathers and remove the leg band after the procedure, or gather molted feathers at home first.
- Bring something familiar, a cage towel or the perch they like best, to help your bird feel settled while you hold them.
- Decide whether a flockmate comes along. Some keepers bring a bonded partner in a carrier; others prefer to show them the body at home.
- Leave when you're ready. Your bird stays in the clinic's cooler until the provider comes to collect.
Memorials that suit a bird
Savannah's historic district is a grid of squares, townhouses and carriage-house apartments where parking is tight and stairs are common, while Southside, the islands and the suburbs toward Pooler and Richmond Hill are more spread out. Mention stairs, entry codes and parking if your pet dies at home. Include your neighborhood and any access issues when you ask for options.

Questions people ask
Why does the Savannah page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 54.2%[1] of Georgia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Savannah?
Usually yes. Pooler is about 10 miles away, Port Wentworth is about 10 miles away and Bluffton is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Savannah?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I get any ashes back from a budgie or finch?
Usually a little, but not much. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a 35 g budgie leaves a gram or two, and a finch may leave less. Ask whether the provider uses a tray or dish for small bodies so the remains can be recovered, and expect a vial or tiny container.
Can two bonded birds be cremated together?
Yes, if you ask. Many providers can cremate two birds in one private cremation, but the remains will be mixed. If you'd prefer separate containers, ask for separate cremations and clear labeling. Some families keep the first bird's remains and ask for the partner's to be added later.
How is a bird's cremation different from a dog's or cat's?
The process is the same, but the scale changes everything. A bird's bones are light and many are hollow, so very little remains. Good providers use a tray or small dish so remains aren't lost, and return them in a container sized for grams. Ask how they handle small bodies before you book.
