Piedmont, California
How bird keepers in Piedmont usually handle a loss
Piedmont Park, with its lawns, old trees and the shady creek canyon below the main terrace, is the city's central green space, and plenty of local pets also spent their lives in terraced back gardens. Those familiar places tend to shape how families remember them. Many keep the ashes indoors or plant something on an upper terrace; before scattering anywhere public, check with City Hall.
Piedmont is a small, entirely residential city of about 10,600 completely surrounded by Oakland, with large early-1900s houses on steep, tree-lined streets. Many homes have long flights of front stairs, terraced lots and very little curb space. When you arrange a home pickup, describe the number of steps, where a car can stop, and whether a side gate or garage entrance would be easier than the front door.
Farm supply stores, poultry swaps and county shows around Piedmont are full of people who have lost birds and dealt with it themselves. Their advice on burial spots and predator-proof graves is usually sound. Where it can fall short is on disease: if hens died without warning, the vet, or the government office that handles livestock disease, should hear about it before anyone digs.
Piedmont's population is around 10,642, the 286th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Oakland, about 2 miles (4 km) away, which is where some providers serving Piedmont are based.
Piedmont sits within easy reach of Oakland (3 miles, a larger centre), Emeryville (3 miles) and Berkeley (4 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Piedmont; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep pet birds.
1.4 million[3]
There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

The local attitude to cremation and burial
Cremation accounts for around 70.5%[1] of deaths in California, and scattering ashes is a familiar ritual here. Bird keepers borrow it naturally: a pinch released from a hilltop, a spoonful under the tree where a hen liked to dust-bathe. Before you scatter on land you don't own, ask the owner or check the park's rules, and keep a little back in case you later want a keepsake.
The California figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Piedmont weather, birds and timing
Mild winters in Piedmont mean fewer heating hazards, but people still light candles, bake and use aerosols more around the holidays. If a bird dies suddenly in the cooler months, run through what was new in the house that week. It could matter for any birds still with you.
Even in Piedmont's mild climate, the warmest weeks around September deserve care, because birds overheat faster than most people realize. After a death on a warm day, don't leave your bird's body in a car or on a windowsill. A cool room for an hour, then the refrigerator, is plenty.

Paying for a bird's cremation: what to expect
Standard US pet insurance typically doesn't cover cremation[5], and few bird owners carry a policy anyway, so plan to pay directly. If you'd like to be present, some crematories charge a viewing fee; posted surcharges run from $25 to $350[6]. For a bird, a short private goodbye at the clinic is usually free.

What California allows for pet birds
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in California.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Piedmont.
The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Piedmont may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do when your bird dies in Piedmont
- Check the rest of the flock first. If other hens look unwell or have also died, call a vet before touching anything else.
- Move her somewhere cool and secure, out of reach of dogs, cats and foxes, in a sealed bag.
- Think about age and history. A hen who was old or slowing down for weeks is a very different case from one who was fine yesterday.
- Choose burial or cremation. Either works when an old hen has quietly faded; if she died without warning, hold off until a vet has advised you.
- Clean the spot where she died and replace the bedding, wearing gloves.
- Keep an eye on the others over the next seven days; eggs, eating and droppings are the first sign something is passing through the flock.
Memorials that suit a bird
Piedmont shares Oakland's mild bayside weather: the warm stretch arrives in September, typically about 70F, and January nights sit around 47F. Because houses stay cool, a family can usually keep a pet at home for several hours with only a blanket on a hard floor and a cold pack wrapped in a pillowcase. Booking the pickup for the same day still spares everyone a long night of waiting.

Questions people ask
Does the Piedmont climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 70°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Piedmont?
Usually yes. Oakland is about 3 miles away, Emeryville is about 3 miles away and Berkeley is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 2 miles from Piedmont) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Piedmont page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I get any ashes back from a budgie or finch?
Usually a little, but not much. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a 35 g budgie leaves a gram or two, and a finch may leave less. Ask whether the provider uses a tray or dish for small bodies so the remains can be recovered, and expect a vial or tiny container.
Can I bury my bird in my garden in California?
In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.
