Pet bird cremation in Chico, California

Chico, California

Losing a bird in Chico: where to start

Chico is a university town in Butte County at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, and its housing ranges from student rentals near campus to older homes under big trees downtown and newer subdivisions on the edges. Sacramento is about ninety miles south, so aftercare options are more local than in a big metro. Ask any provider where the cremation actually takes place and how long the ashes will take to come back.

Bidwell Park runs for miles along Big Chico Creek from the downtown edge up into the foothill canyons, and it is at the centre of how many Chico residents spend time with their pets. City rules govern what can be placed in the park, so do not scatter ashes there without asking. Many families keep ashes at home, or choose a spot in their own garden.

Most bird keepers in Chico have more than one bird, and the ones left behind shape the first day as much as the loss does. Some keepers let a bonded companion see the body for a few minutes before it leaves for cremation; some birds seem to settle afterwards, others show no interest. Keep it brief, wash your hands afterwards and watch the survivor's appetite and droppings for the next week.

Chico is home to about 105,081 people, the 63rd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Oroville (22 miles), Yuba City (43 miles) and Lincoln (66 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Chico routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

70.5%[1]

The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Burial or cremation? How California tends to decide

Locally, 70.5%[1] of people choose cremation, so a written plan for someone's own funeral is a familiar idea to many families. The same habit suits parrot owners. A bird who may outlive you deserves a written plan: who takes them, which avian vet they see and what you'd like done when they die. Keep it with your own papers so it's found.

The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Chico, not as a count of pets.

Timing a bird's aftercare in Chico's climate

During June, July, August and September, backyard flocks around Chico are most at risk. Hens pant, spread their wings and stop laying when a coop overheats. If a hen dies in a heat wave, move her into the shade, bag her and chill her promptly. If several birds die at once, don't assume it was only the heat; call a vet before arranging cremation.

Power cuts during Chico's hottest weeks can catch people out. If the fridge is off, a picnic cooler with ice packs keeps a small bird cold for many hours; wrap the bag so it isn't sitting in meltwater. Call the crematory or your vet and ask whether they can collect sooner, or drop your bird at a clinic with backup power.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does

US providers rarely publish bird-specific prices, so the honest guide is the small-pet band. PetMD puts group cremation from about $50 and private cremation from about $100[5]. For a bird, remains weigh only 3-5% of body weight[4], which is why many Chico keepers skip the large urn and choose a vial or keepsake container.

What California allows for pet birds

People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in California.

To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.

The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Chico may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do when your bird dies in Chico

  1. Remove the bird from the aviary promptly and bag them, wearing gloves.
  2. Look for a pattern. Note the date, the species and anything unusual, such as fluffed birds or wet droppings among the rest.
  3. Call your vet if more than one bird is unwell, and raise the question of a necropsy: what it finds in this bird might save the rest.
  4. Decide how you want small birds handled. Many aviary keepers choose communal cremation for finches and keep a feather or two.
  5. If one bird was special, say so: a private cremation for a single canary is perfectly reasonable.
  6. Clean feeders and water dishes, then walk the aviary looking for any gap a rodent or wild bird could squeeze through.
  7. Keep a simple log noting each loss and its date; over a year it shows your vet any trend.

Keeping your bird close

Chico summers are long and hot, with July afternoons in the mid-90s and many days well above that, while winters bring fog, rain and the odd frosty morning. In the heat, a pet's body should be kept indoors in air conditioning with towel-wrapped ice packs, and collection arranged within the day. In winter there is a little more time, but it is still wise not to wait long.

Questions people ask

How do California attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the Chico page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Chico?

Usually yes. Oroville is about 22 miles away, Yuba City is about 43 miles away and Lincoln is about 66 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Chico?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Are my hen's ashes safe to scatter if she had an illness?

Cremation reaches temperatures that leave only mineral remains, so the ashes themselves don't carry infection. The risk sits with the body before cremation, which is why a vet should advise after unexplained deaths in a flock. Once remains come back, you can scatter or bury them as you would any others, following local rules on land and water.

Is it safe to handle my bird's body?

Usually, with simple care. Wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly, avoid shaking feathers near your face and keep other birds away from the body. Some infections, such as psittacosis, can pass from birds to people, so if several birds are ill, call your vet before handling them.

Can I keep my bird's feathers?

Yes, and many keepers treasure them most. Feathers must be taken before cremation, so choose a few from the tail or wings, or gather molted ones from the cage. If an infection was suspected, wait until your vet has ruled it out before handling feathers from the body.
