Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
What bird aftercare is like in Abu Dhabi
Pet cremation is available in the UAE, but facilities are few, and many families rely on their vet to arrange it. Burial on residential land is generally not permitted in communities and rented villas. If you want your pet's ashes back, ask specifically for an individual cremation, how long it will take, and whether you can receive a certificate if you plan to travel with the ashes.
Abu Dhabi's summer heat is extreme, with temperatures regularly above 40°C and high humidity on the coast. If your pet dies at home in those months, bring them into the coolest air-conditioned room immediately, place ice packs wrapped in towels under the body, and contact your vet quickly. Aftercare options in the emirate are more limited than in many Western cities, so your vet is usually the first point of contact.
Getting a bird to a provider in Abu Dhabi is simpler than it is for most pets. A shoebox lined with a paper towel sits safely on a car seat, and most crematories accept drop-offs by appointment. If you'd rather not travel, many metro services collect from your home or your avian vet, but for a very small bird the collection fee can cost more than the cremation. Ask for both prices before you choose.
Abu Dhabi's population is around 1,483,000.
Families in Abu Dhabi often end up using a provider from Emirates Hills (65 miles), Dubai (76 miles, a larger centre) and Sharjah (89 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
6 million[1]
About 6 million US households keep pet birds.
1.4 million[2]
There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local funeral habits say about pet birds
Wherever you live, cremation for pet birds has become more common as more people keep birds indoors in homes without gardens. In Abu Dhabi, ask whoever handles your bird three things: is it private, how are tiny remains recovered and what container will they come back in?
Heat, cold and drafts in Abu Dhabi
Wherever you are, the first rule for a bird is simple: keep the body cool and bagged, away from food and from other birds. In warm weather that means the refrigerator within an hour or so; in cooler weather you have a little longer. Freeze only if you're sure you won't want a necropsy.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
In the UAE, clinic euthanasia for a small animal costs about AED 400 to 500 including municipal disposal[4], but that disposal is mass cremation with no ashes returned[5]. If you want your bird back, say so before the procedure. Around Abu Dhabi, ask the same question wherever you are: is disposal included, and is it communal?

What United Arab Emirates allows for pet birds
There's no special licence or form for cremating one pet bird in United Arab Emirates. What you do need to think about is the land: whose it is, what's under it and who might dig there later. And if birds have been dying without explanation, the first rule is to let a vet decide what happens next.
In the UAE, Dubai Municipality states that burying animals is not permitted, so cremation is the usual route for pet birds. Shared cremation for a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900; separate (individual) cremation costs more. Ask for the price in writing and how the remains will be returned.
Step by step: from the cage floor to the urn
- Write down what happened before the details fade: the last time your bird seemed normal, what was in their dish, and anything recently brought into the house, like a heater, a cleaning spray or a non-stick pan.
- Refrigerate your bird if there's any chance of a necropsy, sealed in a bag and kept apart from food.
- Phone your avian vet in the next day or so and ask whether a necropsy makes sense; it matters more when there are other birds in the house.
- Tell the vet in writing that a private cremation should follow, so the lab knows to release your bird to you instead of disposing of them.
- Book the cremation and pass the lab's contact details to the provider, so the two can arrange pickup between them.
- Look after yourself and the flock. Stick to the usual feeding and cover times, and notice how much the remaining birds eat this week.
Feathers, songs and other ways to remember
Many Abu Dhabi pet owners are expatriates living in apartment towers on the island or in gated villa communities on the mainland, such as those on Saadiyat, Yas and Al Reem. Building management often has its own procedures for moving an animal through lobbies and lifts. Your vet can usually arrange collection and aftercare; mention your community and building when you ask, as access to some compounds is controlled.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Abu Dhabi?
The closest communities we cover are Emirates Hills (about 65 miles), Dubai (about 76 miles) and Sharjah (about 89 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Abu Dhabi too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Should I refrigerate or freeze my bird before cremation?
If there's any chance you'll want a necropsy, refrigerate your bird, because freezing damages the tissue a pathologist needs to examine. If you're sure you don't want one, freezing is fine and gives you as much time as you need. Either way, wrap your bird in a paper towel and seal them in a bag.
What happens to my bird after a necropsy?
It depends on your instructions. Without them, labs often dispose of bodies with other lab remains. If you want a private cremation, tell your vet in writing before your bird leaves the clinic, and give the lab the crematory's details so they can release your bird for collection.
Is a necropsy worth it for my bird?
It's most worth it when other birds share your home or aviary. A necropsy can identify infections, toxins such as zinc or overheated non-stick fumes, and conditions that could affect the survivors. It has to happen before cremation, so talk to your avian vet within a day or two and keep your bird refrigerated meanwhile.
Can two bonded birds be cremated together?
Yes, if you ask. Many providers can cremate two birds in one private cremation, but the remains will be mixed. If you'd prefer separate containers, ask for separate cremations and clear labeling. Some families keep the first bird's remains and ask for the partner's to be added later.
Can I be present at my bird's cremation in Abu Dhabi?
Some crematories allow it, usually for an extra fee, and a few have a small viewing room. For a small bird, many families prefer a private goodbye at the clinic or at home before collection. If watching matters to you, ask when you book whether the chamber can be viewed and whether a separate room is available.
