Bird Cremation in Bangkok: what to know
Most bird deaths in Bangkok happen at home, often without warning, because birds hide illness so well. That's why this guide starts with the first hour: how to store a small body, whether a post-mortem exam makes sense and who to call. Costs, rules and memorial ideas follow, with a page for each of the 1 communities we cover.
The biggest difference across Bangkok is access to avian vets. Birds are a small share of most clinics' work, so keepers outside the main cities often rely on a general practice for the practical steps and phone a specialist for advice. That's fine for aftercare: any vet can confirm a death, refrigerate your bird and pass them to a crematory.

What local funeral habits say about pet birds
Locally, 80.0%[1] of people choose cremation, so a written plan for someone's own funeral is a familiar idea to many families. The same habit suits parrot owners. A bird who may outlive you deserves a written plan: who takes them, which avian vet they see and what you'd like done when they die. Keep it with your own papers so it's found.
The cremation figure for Bangkok comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Bird cremation prices for Bangkok keepers
Pet funeral customs in Asia are often more elaborate than in the West. In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[2], while a Singapore columbarium lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a small pet under 5 kg[3]. Ask exactly what's included before you compare prices in Bangkok.
In Japan, over 60% of people in one survey preferred an individual pet funeral, against just over 10% for a joint one[4]. By our estimate, a communal cremation at a Tokyo memorial park costs 4.8x[5] the ward's collection fee, so the step up is modest. Prices around Bangkok follow a similar pattern.
| Place | Example | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 communal / JPY 22,000 individual | Tax included |
| Tokyo, Shinjuku City collection | JPY 3,000 | Communal; ashes not returned |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | HKD 1,300 individual | Basic package |
| Singapore (small pet under 5 kg) | SGD 160 communal / SGD 280 private | Columbarium niches extra |

What the law says about a pet bird in Bangkok
Rules for pets after death are set locally, and for birds there's one extra layer: animal health rules for poultry and other birds kept outdoors. A lone budgie is simple. Several dead hens in a week is not, and a call to your vet or the animal health authority comes first. Here's what applies in Bangkok.
Your next few days, in order
- Take a breath. A bird who seemed fine last night and is gone this morning is not a sign that you overlooked anything. Birds are very good at hiding when they're sick.
- Put on gloves or wash your hands well afterwards. Wrap your bird loosely in a paper towel and place them in a small box or clean bag.
- Decide about a necropsy now. Freezing makes an examination harder, so use the fridge if there's any chance you'll want answers. If you're certain you won't, either works.
- Save feathers and the leg band now, while your bird is still with you. Once the cremation is done, neither can be got back.
- Check the birds left behind for fluffed feathers, tail bobbing or changed droppings, and call your avian vet if anything looks wrong.
- Choose private or communal cremation; if you want ashes back, find out how a body this small is recovered.
- Get the total in writing, including collection and the container, before your bird leaves your care.
Memorials that suit a bird
Feathers are the keepsake most bird keepers treasure. A few flight feathers in a shadowbox with the leg band, a single tail feather tucked into a book, or a small bunch in a glass dome can say more than any urn. If you have molted feathers saved from over the years, those count too. Some Bangkok keepers also have a tiny urn made to match the colors of their bird.

Questions people ask
Who handles suspected bird flu in Bangkok?
Most countries treat avian influenza in poultry and kept birds as a reportable disease. Contact a vet or the national animal health authority before moving, burying or cremating birds that died suddenly, and keep the bodies bagged and cool in the meantime.
Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in Bangkok?
Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.
How many communities do you cover in Bangkok?
We currently have local bird cremation guides for 1 communities in Bangkok, including Bangkok. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how to reach an avian-aware provider.
What should I do if my bird dies in the heat?
Wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and refrigerate them straight away; small bodies warm fast. In hot parts of Bangkok, such as Bangkok where summer highs average about °F, move any surviving birds somewhere cooler and watch them closely.
How long do pet birds live?
Much longer than many owners expect, but often less than the records. The Association of Avian Veterinarians gives median captive life expectancies of about 5.5 years for budgies, 9 for cockatiels and African greys and 21 for blue-and-gold macaws. Birds are considered senior from around 6 (budgies) to 30 (macaws), which is a good time to plan aftercare.
Can I get a necropsy for my bird in Bangkok?
Usually, through your vet, who sends the body to a diagnostic lab. Keep your bird refrigerated, not frozen, and call within a day or two. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.
