What bird aftercare is like in Valencia
Valencian pets spend much of their lives in flats and on sunny balconies, with the Turia Gardens, the old riverbed park that runs through the city, as the green space many households share. Families here often want individual cremation so their pet can come home. Ask clearly whether the price covers collection and the urn, as it varies, and check how long it will be before the ashes are ready, which ranges from a day or two to more than a week.
Valencia's long, humid summers mean time matters in July and August, when heat can build quickly in a closed flat. Keep your pet's body in the coolest room, wrapped and with cold packs. Winters are mild, so there is more time then. During Las Fallas in March, the fireworks and street closures can make any trip across the city slower, so plan for that.
A city the size of Valencia usually has more than one pet crematory within reach and emergency hospitals that stay open overnight. What it often lacks is enough avian vets. Birds are a small share of most clinics' work, so many Valencia keepers drive across town to the one practice that sees parrots. That practice is usually the right first call after a death too, because it will know which local crematory handles very small bodies carefully.
Valencia's population is around 791,000, the largest of the 2 Spain communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Alicante (78 miles) and Murcia (110 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Burial or cremation? How Spain tends to decide
Faith and family custom shape aftercare in Spain, whose human cremation rate sits around 50.11%[1]. Some traditions prefer burial for people but have no view about pets; others extend the same care to animals. If a relative feels strongly, a small graveside ceremony for the urn can honor both preferences.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Valencia tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Valencia weather, birds and timing
Wherever you are, the first rule for a bird is simple: keep the body cool and bagged, away from food and from other birds. In warm weather that means the refrigerator within an hour or so; in cooler weather you have a little longer. Freeze only if you're sure you won't want a necropsy.

Bird cremation prices for Valencia keepers
A German consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375[5]. A bird will sit at the bottom of those ranges. In Valencia, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually your first contact, but you can approach a pet crematorium directly for a clearer price.

Before you dig or scatter in Spain
If your bird was a protected or licensed species, such as some native parrots, there may be paperwork to close after a death. For ordinary pet species, the rules in Spain are mostly about where remains may go. Here's a short summary, with links to the official detail.
In Spain, pet crematoria offer individual (incineración individual) and collective cremation, and most arrangements go through the vet. Canaries and other songbirds are widely kept; ask for the smallest weight band and whether a tray is used for tiny remains. If several birds die suddenly, contact a vet before burying or cremating them.
A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird
- Take a breath. If you found your bird on the cage floor with no warning, you haven't missed something obvious. Birds hide illness well.
- Put on gloves if you have them, or scrub your hands once you're done. Fold a paper towel gently around your bird and settle them in a clean bag or small box.
- Decide about a necropsy now. If you might want to know why your bird died, refrigerate; don't freeze. If you're sure you don't, either is fine.
- Save feathers and the leg band before anything else happens. They can't be recovered after cremation.
- Check the birds left behind for one sitting puffed up, a tail that bobs with each breath or droppings that have changed, and ring your avian vet if you see any of it.
- Choose private or communal cremation, and ask the provider how they recover very small remains.
- Get the total in writing before you hand your bird over, and check it covers pickup and the container the ashes come home in.
Small, lasting ways to honor a bird
Most people in Valencia live in apartment blocks, often with a small balcony and a lift that may or may not fit a large carrier. When a pet dies at home, those practical details matter, so mention them to anyone collecting. In Spain it is common for the vet to coordinate cremation, and individual cremation with ashes returned is widely offered, but ask exactly what is included in the price.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Valencia?
Usually yes. Alicante is about 78 miles away and Murcia is about 110 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Spain attitudes to cremation compare?
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) puts the Spain human cremation rate at about 50.11%[1]. We show it on the Valencia page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can my bird be cremated with a favorite toy or perch?
Usually not. Metal, plastic and treated wood can damage equipment or add residue to the remains, so crematories normally remove them. A small piece of untreated wood or paper may be allowed; ask first. Most families keep the toy instead and display it beside the container, which gives them more to hold.
Where can I find an avian vet near Valencia?
In a city this size there's usually at least one practice that sees birds regularly, often with extended hours. For aftercare you don't strictly need an avian specialist: any clinic can confirm a death and store your bird. The specialist matters most if you want a necropsy interpreted.
How long does it take to get my bird's remains back?
Often one to two weeks, sometimes sooner in a large city. In smaller towns where birds travel to a regional crematory, it can take longer. Because a bird's remains are so small and light, some providers can post them with tracking. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
How much does bird cremation cost near Valencia?
Prices depend on the provider and whether you want the remains back. Birds fall in the smallest weight band everywhere, so individual cremation typically costs about the same as for a very small cat. Ask for a quote in local currency that includes collection, the cremation and the container.
