Arranging a parrot or bird cremation in Barcelona

Barcelona, Catalonia

Who helps with a pet bird's aftercare around Barcelona

Many Barcelona pets spent their lives on balconies and terraces, in sunny flats or in the courtyards at the heart of the Eixample blocks, and those small spaces often shape how owners want to remember them. An individual cremation with ashes returned gives you the most options: keeping the ashes at home, scattering part of them somewhere meaningful, or dividing them among family.

Most Barcelona pets live in apartments, from the grid of the Eixample to the narrow streets of the old town, where vehicles cannot always get close to the door. Pet aftercare providers in the Barcelona area generally collect from a flat or from the vet's clinic; tell them the floor, whether the building has a lift and whether a van can stop outside. Services commonly work in Catalan and Spanish.

Even in a metro the size of Barcelona, backyard hens are common in neighborhoods with yards. A hen that dies of old age is handled like any small pet. It's different when several birds die within days of each other: that's the moment to call a vet or the animal health authority before booking anything, because avian influenza rules may decide what happens next. City crematories will often ask about this on the phone.

With roughly 1,620,000 residents, Barcelona is one of the Catalonia communities we cover.

Our pages for Palma de Mallorca (128 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Barcelona as well.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

A bird at home in Barcelona

Why local cremation habits matter for your bird

About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, a share that has climbed steadily. Pet aftercare has moved the same way, especially among people in apartments and rentals who can't bury a pet at home. For bird keepers, that has made private cremation for very small animals easier to find than it was a generation ago.

That Spain rate is a human one, published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). We quote it for Barcelona only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

What Barcelona's seasons mean for your bird's aftercare

Wherever you are, the first rule for a bird is simple: keep the body cool and bagged, away from food and from other birds. In warm weather that means the refrigerator within an hour or so; in cooler weather you have a little longer. Freeze only if you're sure you won't want a necropsy.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does

A German consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375[5]. A bird will sit at the bottom of those ranges. In Barcelona, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually your first contact, but you can approach a pet crematorium directly for a clearer price.

The full price table by size is on our Catalonia page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Burial, scattering and bird flu rules in Catalonia

There's no special licence or form for cremating one pet bird in Catalonia. What you do need to think about is the land: whose it is, what's under it and who might dig there later. And if birds have been dying without explanation, the first rule is to let a vet decide what happens next.

In Spain, pet crematoria offer individual (incineración individual) and collective cremation, and most arrangements go through the vet. Canaries and other songbirds are widely kept; ask for the smallest weight band and whether a tray is used for tiny remains. If several birds die suddenly, contact a vet before burying or cremating them.

What to do when your bird dies in Barcelona

  1. Book a quiet appointment. When euthanasia is what your avian vet recommends, request the earliest or latest time they offer; the waiting room is quieter then.
  2. Settle aftercare beforehand. Choose between private and communal cremation and let the clinic know ahead of time, so you won't be handed paperwork afterwards.
  3. Choose what to keep now. Ask the vet to trim a few feathers and remove the leg band after the procedure, or gather molted feathers at home first.
  4. Bring something familiar, a cage towel or the perch they like best, to help your bird feel settled while you hold them.
  5. Decide whether a flockmate comes along. A bonded partner can travel in a carrier and be there, or you can let them see the body once you're home; keepers do both.
  6. Leave when you're ready. Staff will store your bird in their cooler until collection day.

Ideas for remembering a bird who talked, sang or simply watched

Barcelona summers are hot and humid, and flats without air conditioning can become very warm. If your pet dies at home in July or August, move them to the coolest room and place cool packs wrapped in towels beneath them. Winters are mild, so there is usually a little more time then. Garden burial is rarely an option in a city this dense, which is one reason cremation is the most common choice.

Every other community in Catalonia, and all of Spain, is listed too.

Questions people ask

Why does the Barcelona page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

What happens to my bird after a necropsy?

It depends on your instructions. Without them, labs often dispose of bodies with other lab remains. If you want a private cremation, tell your vet in writing before your bird leaves the clinic, and give the lab the crematory's details so they can release your bird for collection.

Is private cremation worth it for a very small bird?

It depends on what you want to keep. If having your bird's own remains matters, even a gram in a vial can mean a lot. If what you'll treasure is something you can see and hold, communal cremation plus feathers saved beforehand costs less and may give you more to keep.

What size urn does a bird need?

Smaller than most people expect. A budgie or finch needs only a vial or locket, a cockatiel a keepsake urn, and even a large macaw rarely needs more than a few cubic inches. A backyard hen returns a little more. Our ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your bird's species and weight.

Can I bury my bird in my garden in Catalonia?

In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.

Can my bird be cremated with a favorite toy or perch?

Usually not. Metal, plastic and treated wood can damage equipment or add residue to the remains, so crematories normally remove them. A small piece of untreated wood or paper may be allowed; ask first. Most families keep the toy instead and display it beside the container, which gives them more to hold.
