About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, a share that has climbed steadily. Pet aftercare has moved the same way, especially among people in apartments and rentals who can't bury a pet at home. For bird keepers, that has made private cremation for very small animals easier to find than it was a generation ago.

What the law says about a pet bird in Cantabria
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Cantabria.
In Spain, pet crematoria offer individual (incineración individual) and collective cremation, and most arrangements go through the vet. Canaries and other songbirds are widely kept; ask for the smallest weight band and whether a tray is used for tiny remains. If several birds die suddenly, contact a vet before burying or cremating them.
A calm checklist for the next 48 hours
- Remove the bird from the aviary promptly and bag them, wearing gloves.
- Look for a pattern. Note the date, the species and anything unusual, such as fluffed birds or wet droppings among the rest.
- Call your vet if more than one bird is unwell, and ask whether a necropsy on this bird could protect the others.
- Decide how you want small birds handled. For finches, communal cremation is a common choice among aviary keepers, with a feather or two kept back.
- If one bird was special, say so: a private cremation for a single canary is perfectly reasonable.
- Clean feeders and water dishes, then walk the aviary looking for any gap a rodent or wild bird could squeeze through.
- Keep a simple log noting each loss and its date; over a year it shows your vet any trend.

Yes, and many keepers treasure them most. Feathers must be taken before cremation, so choose a few from the tail or wings, or gather molted ones from the cage. If an infection was suspected, wait until your vet has ruled it out before handling feathers from the body.
What if several of my birds die at once near Santander?
Treat it as a possible disease problem before it's an aftercare decision. Call a vet or the national animal health authority, keep the bodies bagged and cool, and don't bury or cremate them until you've been told what to do. In most countries, bird flu in poultry or aviary birds must be reported.
Should my other bird see the body?
Many keepers let a bonded companion see the body for a few minutes, and some birds seem calmer afterwards. There's no firm evidence either way, so do what feels right. If the death could be infectious, ask your vet first. Afterwards, keep routines steady and watch the survivor's appetite for a week.
