Bird Cremation in Tokyo: what to know
Across Tokyo, most bird cremations are arranged through the vet, but you can contact a crematory directly, and for a bird that's often simplest: you can carry a small box to a drop-off yourself and skip the collection fee. Prices for birds follow the small-pet band, so compare the total, not just the cremation fee.
Bird cremation works much the same across Tokyo, but where you live changes the practical details. In the larger cities, such as Tokyo, Setagaya and Minato, you'll usually find a few pet crematories and at least one clinic that sees birds regularly. In smaller towns, the nearest avian vet may be a long drive away, and a bird's remains may travel to a regional crematory and back.

Burial or cremation? How Tokyo tends to decide
In Tokyo, about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That figure is about people, not birds, but it shapes the local market: more crematories, more competition and more providers willing to talk through options. Use that to your advantage. Ask two of them how they cremate a small bird, and go with the one whose answer is clearest.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Tokyo rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
In Japan, over 60% of people in one survey preferred an individual pet funeral, against just over 10% for a joint one[2]. By our estimate, a communal cremation at a Tokyo memorial park costs 4.8x[3] the ward's collection fee, so the step up is modest. Prices around Tokyo follow a similar pattern.
Pet funeral customs in Asia are often more elaborate than in the West. In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[4], while a Singapore columbarium lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a small pet under 5 kg[5]. Ask exactly what's included before you compare prices in Tokyo.
| Place | Example | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 communal / JPY 22,000 individual | Tax included |
| Tokyo, Shinjuku City collection | JPY 3,000 | Communal; ashes not returned |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | HKD 1,300 individual | Basic package |
| Singapore (small pet under 5 kg) | SGD 160 communal / SGD 280 private | Columbarium niches extra |

Before you dig or scatter in Tokyo
Most rules that touch bird aftercare in Tokyo were written with dogs, cats or livestock in mind, but they apply to birds too. The ones worth knowing cover home burial, scattering ashes on public land and reporting suspected bird flu in poultry or aviary birds.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, and small birds such as budgerigars and Java sparrows are popular pets. Many municipalities collect deceased pets for a small fee, but the ashes are not returned; Shinjuku City, for example, charges JPY 3,000 per animal[7]. If you want your bird's remains back, book an individual cremation with a pet funeral provider.
A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird
- Check the rest of the flock first. Should any other hen seem off, or another have died, leave everything where it is and ring a vet.
- Move her somewhere cool and secure, sealed in a bag where no dog, cat or fox can get at her.
- Think about age and history. A hen who was old or slowing down for weeks is a very different case from one who was fine yesterday.
- Choose burial or cremation. For an elderly hen who simply faded, either suits; for sudden deaths, wait for veterinary advice.
- Clean the spot where she died with gloves on, and put down fresh bedding.
- Keep an eye on the others over the next seven days; eggs, eating and droppings are the first sign something is passing through the flock.
Memorials that suit a bird
Planting something that draws wild birds is a gentle memorial for a bird keeper. A flowering shrub, a feeder by the window or a small birdbath in a Tokyo garden or balcony brings birdsong back into the home. If you'd like, a pinch of your bird's remains can go into the soil at planting time.

Questions people ask
When will my bird's ashes come back in Tokyo?
By our estimate, a typical window across the markets we cover is 3 to 14 days, though some providers are faster and some take several weeks. In rural parts of Tokyo, where the nearest crematory may be hours away, allow longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether remains can be posted.
Is cremation common in Tokyo?
For people, about 99.97%[1] of deaths in Tokyo end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among bird keepers, cremation is common for indoor birds, especially in apartments and rentals, while backyard hens are still often buried on the property.
Do crematories in Tokyo handle very small birds carefully?
Most can, but practice varies. Ask what they place a tiny body on during cremation, whether the chamber is cleared between animals and what container they return. Providers who cremate birds regularly will answer without hesitation. If one seems unsure, try another before you book.
What should I do if my bird dies in the heat?
Wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and refrigerate them straight away; small bodies warm fast. In hot parts of Tokyo, such as Tokyo where summer highs average about °F, move any surviving birds somewhere cooler and watch them closely.
Can I get a necropsy for my bird in Tokyo?
Usually, through your vet, who sends the body to a diagnostic lab. Keep your bird refrigerated, not frozen, and call within a day or two. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.
How much does bird cremation cost in Tokyo?
Birds fall into a provider's smallest weight band, so private cremation in Tokyo usually costs about what a small cat's would. Big-city providers may charge more for collection; rural ones may add mileage. You can often save by bringing your bird in yourself. Ask for an itemized written total.
