Siena, Tuscany
Pet birds in Siena: the local picture
Siena has hot, dry summers and cool, sometimes frosty winters, as befits its hilltop position in central Tuscany. In July and August, if your pet dies at home, keep them in the coolest room, often one with thick stone walls, with ice packs wrapped in cloth. Try to arrange collection or a drop-off the same day during a heatwave. In cooler months there is more time, so you can wait for family to arrive before collection.
Siena's historic centre sits on three ridges, a maze of steep lanes, stone apartment buildings and limited traffic zones where most cars can't drive freely. If you live inside the walls, tell a provider exactly where you are and whether a vehicle can get close, since carrying a pet down stairs and alleys may be part of collection. In the newer districts outside the walls, access is usually simpler.
Around Siena, the feed store often knows more local chicken keepers than any vet does. For aftercare, though, the vet is usually the link, since many rural crematories receive small animals through clinics. If you'd rather deliver your bird yourself, phone the crematory directly; many will agree a drop-off time, and it avoids a mileage charge on top of a small-bird fee.
With roughly 54,000 residents, Siena is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Florence, roughly 31 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Siena run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Florence (31 miles, a larger centre), Bologna (81 miles, a larger centre) and Rome (114 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Siena routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

What local funeral habits say about pet birds
In Italy, about 38.16%[1] of people are cremated, fewer than in much of the country. Don't let that make you feel you're asking for something unusual. Vets here arrange private cremation for small pets regularly. The key is to say clearly what you want back, because a clinic that mostly sees burials may default to communal cremation unless you ask.
That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Siena only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing a bird's aftercare in Siena's climate
Seasonal changes affect when people choose to scatter or plant a memorial, not whether cremation works. Remains stay stable indoors for years, so choose a day that suits the family around Siena rather than the calendar.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
A German consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375[5]. A bird will sit at the bottom of those ranges. In Siena, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually your first contact, but you can approach a pet crematorium directly for a clearer price.

Burial, scattering and bird flu rules in Tuscany
Rules for pets after death are set locally, and for birds there's one extra layer: animal health rules for poultry and other birds kept outdoors. A lone budgie is simple. Several dead hens in a week is not, and a call to your vet or the animal health authority comes first. Here's what applies in Tuscany.
Italy has about 12.9 million[7] ornamental birds, the most in Europe, so vets here are used to canaries, budgies and parrots. Pet crematoria offer individual (cremazione individuale) and collective cremation; only individual returns the remains. If backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, call a vet or the local ASL veterinary service before arranging aftercare.
Your next few days, in order
- Book a quiet appointment. If your avian vet has advised euthanasia, ask for the first or last slot of the day, when the clinic is calmer.
- Settle aftercare beforehand. Decide on private or communal cremation and tell the clinic in advance, so there are no forms to fill in afterwards.
- Choose what to keep now. Ask the vet to trim a few feathers and remove the leg band after the procedure, or gather molted feathers at home first.
- Bring something familiar, such as a towel from the cage or a favorite perch, so your bird is calm in your hands.
- Decide whether a flockmate comes along. Some keepers bring a bonded partner in a carrier; others prefer to show them the body at home.
- Leave when you're ready. Your bird stays in the clinic's cooler until the provider comes to collect.
Memorials that suit a bird
Many Sienese live in apartments, and cats are a familiar part of the old town, on windowsills, in courtyards and in doorways. When a pet dies in a flat, burial is rarely practical, so cremation is often the natural choice. Italy's pet cremation services have grown in recent years, and it's reasonable to ask how the process works and whether ashes come back individually.

Questions people ask
Why does the Siena page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Florence to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Florence (roughly 31 miles from Siena) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Siena?
Usually yes. Florence is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 81 miles away and Rome is about 114 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Do pet crematories near Siena handle backyard chickens?
Most companion-animal crematories accept pet hens, ducks and pigeons, usually in their smallest weight band. Some rural providers are more used to poultry than city ones. Mention the species and how the bird died when you call, because a sudden death in a flock may need a vet's input first.
What if the nearest avian vet is far from Siena?
Use your local clinic for the practical steps: confirming the death, refrigerating your bird and handing them to a crematory. Then phone the avian vet for advice on whether a necropsy makes sense. Many will talk it through, and they can tell the local clinic how to package your bird for a lab.
Is a necropsy worth it for my bird?
It's most worth it when other birds share your home or aviary. A necropsy can identify infections, toxins such as zinc or overheated non-stick fumes, and conditions that could affect the survivors. It has to happen before cremation, so talk to your avian vet within a day or two and keep your bird refrigerated meanwhile.
