When your bird dies in Florence: aftercare options

Florence, Tuscany

Pet birds in Florence: the local picture

A garden grave is rarely realistic in Florence, where most families have a balcony rather than a garden, and Tuscan and municipal rules decide where it is allowed at all. Most Florentines therefore choose cremation, either individually, so the ashes come home, or communally. A pet cemetery on the edge of the city is another option for families who want a place to visit. Your vet will know what operates nearby.

Most Florentines live in apartments, many in centuries-old buildings in the historic centre with steep stone stairs and no lift, while others live in the suburbs or in the hills toward Fiesole. Cars need a permit to enter the historic centre's ZTL, so a van may not reach your door. Tell the provider which piazza or corner a van can reach. Most Florentine vets can also arrange cremation for you.

A lot of the birds in Florence are budgies and cockatiels bought for children, and the first loss often lands on a school night. It's fine to keep your bird refrigerated for a day or two while the family talks it over. Children cope better when they're included in small decisions, such as choosing a feather to keep or picking a spot for the container, than when a bird simply disappears.

With roughly 382,000 residents, Florence is the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Bologna, roughly 50 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Florence run from there.

Florence sits within easy reach of Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Florence; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial or cremation? How Italy tends to decide

Only 38.16%[1] of funerals in Italy are cremations, so burial runs deep, and older relatives may be surprised you'd cremate a canary. That's all right. Explain the practical reasons, such as a rental home or a planned move, and invite them to help choose a feather or a spot for the container. Being included often softens a disagreement.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Italy figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Florence tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Timing a bird's aftercare in Florence's climate

Cremated remains aren't affected by weather, so there's no rush to scatter or bury them. Many bird keepers wait for a calm, dry day, sometimes the anniversary of the day their bird first came home.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does

Europe keeps about 48.2 million[5] ornamental birds, but few crematoria publish bird-only prices. Some do list a band for the smallest pets: an Irish crematorium quotes individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[6]. Ask providers serving Florence whether they have a similar small-animal price.

We keep the detailed Tuscany price table on one page so it stays current: see Tuscany prices.

Burial, scattering and bird flu rules in Tuscany

Most rules that touch bird aftercare in Tuscany were written with dogs, cats or livestock in mind, but they apply to birds too. The ones worth knowing cover home burial, scattering ashes on public land and reporting suspected bird flu in poultry or aviary birds.

Italy has about 12.9 million[8] ornamental birds, the most in Europe, so vets here are used to canaries, budgies and parrots. Pet crematoria offer individual (cremazione individuale) and collective cremation; only individual returns the remains. If backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, call a vet or the local ASL veterinary service before arranging aftercare.

The first day, step by step

  1. Take a breath. If you found your bird on the cage floor with no warning, you haven't missed something obvious. Birds hide illness well.
  2. Put on gloves or wash your hands well afterwards. Wrap your bird loosely in a paper towel and place them in a small box or clean bag.
  3. Decide about a necropsy now. Freezing makes an examination harder, so use the fridge if there's any chance you'll want answers. If you're certain you won't, either works.
  4. Save feathers and the leg band now, while your bird is still with you. Once the cremation is done, neither can be got back.
  5. Check the birds left behind for one sitting puffed up, a tail that bobs with each breath or droppings that have changed, and ring your avian vet if you see any of it.
  6. Choose private or communal cremation, and ask the provider how they recover very small remains.
  7. Get the total in writing, including collection and the container, before your bird leaves your care.

Memorials that suit a bird

Florence sits in a bowl surrounded by hills, and summers are very hot, often well above 35°C, while winters are cool and damp. In summer, cool your pet quickly: shutters closed, a tiled floor, a towel and cold packs. Summer tourist traffic also slows movement around the city, so contact your vet or a provider as soon as you can.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Florence follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?

Usually yes. Siena is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 50 miles away and Portofino is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Bologna to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Bologna (roughly 50 miles from Florence) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Should I refrigerate or freeze my bird before cremation?

If there's any chance you'll want a necropsy, refrigerate your bird, because freezing damages the tissue a pathologist needs to examine. If you're sure you don't want one, freezing is fine and gives you as much time as you need. Either way, wrap your bird in a paper towel and seal them in a bag.

Can I bring my bird to the crematory myself in Florence?

Usually yes. Many crematories accept drop-offs by appointment, and for a bird it's easy: a small box lined with a paper towel is enough. Driving over yourself removes the collection fee, which for a small bird can be more than the cremation. Call ahead so someone is there to meet you.

Can a vet put my bird to sleep at home near Florence?

Sometimes. Mobile vets who offer home euthanasia mostly see dogs and cats, but some will visit for a bird, especially an elderly parrot who is stressed by travel. Ask whether they're comfortable with the species, and whether they can transport your bird to a crematory afterwards. If not, your avian vet can usually offer a quiet appointment instead.
