What bird aftercare is like in Montpellier
Summers in Montpellier are long, hot and dry, and a pet's body must be kept cool quickly: a towel, cold packs near the belly, and the shuttered, coolest room in the flat. Autumn can bring sudden, very heavy Mediterranean rainstorms that disrupt roads for a day or two. If collection is delayed by weather, your vet may be able to keep your pet in cold storage until cremation can go ahead.
Montpellier is a young, fast-growing city of apartments, from the narrow streets of the historic Écusson to the newer districts around Port Marianne. Many residents get around by tram and bicycle rather than car, which matters when a pet dies at home. In France, vets commonly arrange cremation for you, and some providers collect from your address. When you request options, say whether you have a car and which floor you live on.
When a bird dies after surgery or during a hospital stay near Montpellier, the clinic will ask about aftercare while you're still in shock. You can ask for time. Say the body should be kept refrigerated, that you want to discuss a necropsy, and that nothing should go to communal cremation without your signature. Clinics are used to this and won't rush you.
About 277,000 people live in Montpellier, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 2 Occitanie communities we cover.
Our pages for Marseille (78 miles, a larger centre), Toulon (108 miles) and Toulouse (122 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Montpellier as well.

3-5% of body weight[4]

The published sources behind those figures are UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release.

The local attitude to cremation and burial
Burial remains the norm in France; only 44.91%[1] of residents are cremated when they die, and many families have a spot in the yard where past pets rest. A bird fits easily beside them. If you'd rather cremate, you won't be the first: small-pet cremation is offered through most vets, even where human cremation is uncommon.
We take the France rate from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Montpellier, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Timing a bird's aftercare in Montpellier's climate
Wherever you are, the first rule for a bird is simple: keep the body cool and bagged, away from food and from other birds. In warm weather that means the refrigerator within an hour or so; in cooler weather you have a little longer. Freeze only if you're sure you won't want a necropsy.

Paying for a bird's cremation: what to expect
Norway shows how wide European prices can be: one crematorium lists communal cremation from NOK 1,190 and separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for the lightest band, with NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return[5][6]. A bird needs no rush. Around Montpellier, ask for the standard return and spend the difference on a keepsake.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Occitanie
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Occitanie.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération individuelle or collective; only individual cremation returns your bird's remains. Backyard poultry keepers are expected to declare their birds to the mairie, and sudden deaths in a flock should be reported to a vet or the departmental veterinary services before burial or cremation. Ask for the price of the smallest weight band.
A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Use the word "died" rather than softer phrases such as "went to sleep", which can confuse young children.
- Let them see the bird if they want to, tucked into a soft cloth. For many children this is comforting, but never push a child who would rather not.
- Give them a job: they might pick out a feather to save, make a drawing, or decide which shelf the container goes on.
- Keep your bird refrigerated while the family decides between a small burial and cremation.
- Explain what cremation means in plain words: the body is turned into a small amount of soft ash that comes home.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Let your child feel the loss for a while, and when another bird comes up, let them help decide.
Feathers, songs and other ways to remember
Families in Montpellier choose between individual cremation, where the ashes come back to you, and communal cremation, where they don't. Your vet will usually ask which you prefer, sometimes quite quickly after a death. It is fine to pause and ask for the price of each in writing. If you want the ashes back, confirm that the cremation is individual rather than simply separated.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in France?
For people, yes: about 44.91%[1] of France deaths end in cremation, according to ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Montpellier follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Montpellier?
Usually yes. Marseille is about 78 miles away, Toulon is about 108 miles away and Toulouse is about 122 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How is a bird's cremation different from a dog's or cat's?
The process is the same, but the scale changes everything. A bird's bones are light and many are hollow, so very little remains. Good providers use a tray or small dish so remains aren't lost, and return them in a container sized for grams. Ask how they handle small bodies before you book.
Is a necropsy worth it for my bird?
It's most worth it when other birds share your home or aviary. A necropsy can identify infections, toxins such as zinc or overheated non-stick fumes, and conditions that could affect the survivors. It has to happen before cremation, so talk to your avian vet within a day or two and keep your bird refrigerated meanwhile.
Can I keep my bird's feathers?
Yes, and many keepers treasure them most. Feathers must be taken before cremation, so choose a few from the tail or wings, or gather molted ones from the cage. If an infection was suspected, wait until your vet has ruled it out before handling feathers from the body.
Can my bird be cremated with a favorite toy or perch?
Usually not. Metal, plastic and treated wood can damage equipment or add residue to the remains, so crematories normally remove them. A small piece of untreated wood or paper may be allowed; ask first. Most families keep the toy instead and display it beside the container, which gives them more to hold.
