Arranging a bird cremation in Paris
Paris summers can bring intense heatwaves, and apartments under zinc roofs heat up fast. In hot weather, cool your pet's body within a few hours: wrap them in a towel, place ice packs around the body, close the shutters and choose the coolest room you have. Winters are cool and damp, which buys a little more time, but arranging aftercare within a day or two keeps options open.
Most Parisians live in apartments, often in Haussmann-era buildings with tiny lifts or top-floor rooms up six flights of stairs, and many don't own a car. Pet crematoria are in the suburbs outside the périphérique, so collection from the apartment is the usual first step. French rules allow garden burial only in limited circumstances, which rules it out for most Parisians anyway. Share your arrondissement and building details when you ask.
Because Paris has many providers, quotes can differ widely, and birds expose the gap. One crematory may charge its full smallest band for a 35 g budgie; another may have a lower small-animal price or offer partitioned cremation. Ask each for a written total that names the species and says whether it's private, partitioned or communal. Two calls usually show you what the local market looks like.

The local attitude to cremation and burial
Burial is still common in France, where about 44.91%[1] of people are cremated. For a hen or a finch, a garden grave is a gentle and inexpensive choice. Just think ahead: if a bird died suddenly and other birds could be at risk, a vet may want to examine the body first, and some disease situations rule out home burial altogether.
We take the France rate from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Paris, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

If you keep birds outdoors near Paris, the changing seasons bring wild birds through, and with them a small risk of disease reaching a coop or aviary. Several sudden deaths close together are a reason to call a vet before arranging anything else.

What Ile-de-France allows for pet birds
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in Ile-de-France.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération individuelle or collective; only individual cremation returns your bird's remains. Backyard poultry keepers are expected to declare their birds to the mairie, and sudden deaths in a flock should be reported to a vet or the departmental veterinary services before burial or cremation. Ask for the price of the smallest weight band.
The first day, step by step
- Take a breath. A bird who seemed fine last night and is gone this morning is not a sign that you overlooked anything. Birds are very good at hiding when they're sick.
- Put on gloves or wash your hands well afterwards. Wrap your bird loosely in a paper towel and place them in a small box or clean bag.
- Decide about a necropsy now. Freezing makes an examination harder, so use the fridge if there's any chance you'll want answers. If you're certain you won't, either works.
- Save feathers and the leg band before anything else happens. They can't be recovered after cremation.
- Check the birds left behind for fluffed feathers, tail bobbing or changed droppings, and call your avian vet if anything looks wrong.
- Choose private or communal cremation; if you want ashes back, find out how a body this small is recovered.
- Get the total in writing before you hand your bird over, and check it covers pickup and the container the ashes come home in.
Remembering your bird in Paris
Many Parisian families picture their pet in one favorite place: a sunny windowsill above the street, a courtyard, or the quays of the Seine, the Bois de Boulogne or the Bois de Vincennes. Scattering ashes in public parks or the river generally isn't allowed without permission, so many families keep the ashes at home or take them to family land in the countryside.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Paris?
Usually yes. Neuilly-sur-Seine is about 4 miles away, Versailles is about 11 miles away and Reims is about 81 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Paris page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bring my bird to the crematory myself in Paris?
Usually yes. Many crematories accept drop-offs by appointment, and for a bird it's easy: a small box lined with a paper towel is enough. Driving over yourself removes the collection fee, which for a small bird can be more than the cremation. Call ahead so someone is there to meet you.
Can I arrange a bird cremation outside office hours in Paris?
Emergency clinics in a city this size can usually store your bird overnight or through a weekend, then pass them to a crematory. There's rarely a need to pay for after-hours collection for a bird: refrigerated and bagged, a small body is fine for a day or two.
Where can I find an avian vet near Paris?
In a city this size there's usually at least one practice that sees birds regularly, often with extended hours. For aftercare you don't strictly need an avian specialist: any clinic can confirm a death and store your bird. The specialist matters most if you want a necropsy interpreted.
Will I get any ashes back from a budgie or finch?
Usually a little, but not much. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a 35 g budgie leaves a gram or two, and a finch may leave less. Ask whether the provider uses a tray or dish for small bodies so the remains can be recovered, and expect a vial or tiny container.
