Highland, Utah
Pet birds in Highland: the local picture
Highland sits in the northeast corner of Utah County near the mouth of American Fork Canyon, a town of spacious lots and newer family homes about 24 miles from Salt Lake City. Practices in American Fork, Lehi and Alpine are close by. Because houses here tend to sit well back from the street on large parcels, mention any gate code or long driveway when you arrange a home collection.
The Murdock Canal Trail crosses Highland on its way between Lehi and Orem, and plenty of residents spend evenings on it with their animals, Timpanogos glowing in the late light. It's a shared public path, so ashes don't belong there. With lots this size, a quiet corner of your own garden, maybe near a favorite sunning spot, is an easy and private alternative.
In a smaller place like Highland, the local vet may see birds only now and then, and the nearest avian specialist could be in a larger centre such as Salt Lake City. After a death, your local clinic can still help: it can confirm the death, keep your bird refrigerated and send them on the crematory's regular route. Ask how often that route runs, because in towns it may be only once or twice a week.
About 21,571 people live in Highland, which makes it the 46th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Highland are based about 24 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are American Fork (3 miles), Lehi (4 miles, a larger centre) and Pleasant Grove (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Highland too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
46.1%[1]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep pet birds.
1.4 million[3]
There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation customs in Utah, and what they mean for birds
Only 46.1%[1] of funerals in Utah are cremations, so burial runs deep, and older relatives may be surprised you'd cremate a canary. That's all right. Explain the practical reasons, such as a rental home or a planned move, and invite them to help choose a feather or a spot for the container. Being included often softens a disagreement.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Highland tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, cold and drafts in Highland
Seasons like Highland's make a two-step goodbye common: cremation now, then a small scattering or planting when the weather is kind. Keep the remains indoors at room temperature in the meantime; heat and cold don't affect them. A spring morning or a calm autumn evening often feels right.
Heating and cooling both put strain on indoor birds in Highland: dry air in winter, stuffy rooms in summer. After a loss in either season, look at the cage position and airflow before you settle a new or remaining bird. A sudden death beside a heater vent or an air conditioner is worth mentioning to your avian vet.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
By our estimate, across the markets we compared, private cremation costs ~2.0x[5] as much as communal. For a dog that gap can be hundreds of dollars; for a bird it's often less than a tank of gas. So let the choice rest on whether returned remains matter to you, not on the saving. For most families, the extra is modest.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Utah
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Utah.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Highland.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Highland's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first day, step by step
- Remove the bird from the aviary promptly and bag them, wearing gloves.
- Look for a pattern. Note the date, the species and anything unusual, such as fluffed birds or wet droppings among the rest.
- Call your vet if more than one bird is unwell, and raise the question of a necropsy: what it finds in this bird might save the rest.
- Decide how you want small birds handled. For finches, communal cremation is a common choice among aviary keepers, with a feather or two kept back.
- If one bird was special, say so: a private cremation for a single canary is perfectly reasonable.
- Clean feeders and water dishes, then walk the aviary looking for any gap a rodent or wild bird could squeeze through.
- Keep a simple log of losses through the year; it helps your vet spot trends.
Feathers, songs and other ways to remember
July afternoons near the canyon mouth reach the mid-90s, while snow can settle in from November until late February. On a hot day, carry your companion's body into the coolest part of the house, away from glass doors, and aim for pickup within hours. Cold weather gives you somewhat longer, though not a whole weekend, and snow on the canyon-mouth roads can slow a provider's arrival.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 24 miles from Highland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Highland climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 95°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[1]. We show it on the Highland page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Highland?
Usually yes. American Fork is about 3 miles away, Lehi is about 4 miles away and Pleasant Grove is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What should I do if my bird dies in the Highland summer heat?
Move your bird out of the heat straight away, wrap them in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and put them in the refrigerator. Small bodies warm up fast. If other birds shared the space, move them somewhere cooler and watch them closely, because heat stroke can affect the whole flock.
What happens if my bird dies while I'm away from Highland?
Ask the sitter or boarding service to chill your bird, bagged and labeled, then phone your vet so the clinic can take over storage. Nothing needs deciding until you return. Tell the clinic in writing that no disposal should happen without your approval. When you're back, you can choose between private and communal cremation calmly.
