Hitchcock, Texas
Pet birds in Hitchcock: the local picture
Hitchcock sits low, with bayous and drainage ditches crossing the prairie, and heavy rain or tropical storms can cover roads quickly. Anyone with small pets such as birds, reptiles, guinea pigs or rabbits should keep carriers and a list of nearby clinics ready. If you evacuate during a storm and a pet dies, a vet at your destination can often help with cremation arrangements.
Gulf humidity shapes daily life in Hitchcock from April to October, and even winter rarely brings more than a passing frost. When a pet dies between April and October, bring them into the most shaded room, rest them on a folded sheet and plan for a vet visit or collection within hours. A loss on a stormy night can usually wait until morning if the room is cool.
Around Hitchcock, the feed store often knows more local chicken keepers than any vet does. For aftercare, though, the vet is usually the link, since many rural crematories receive small animals through clinics. If you'd rather deliver your bird yourself, phone the crematory directly; many will agree a drop-off time, and it avoids a mileage charge on top of a small-bird fee.
About 7,722 people live in Hitchcock, which makes it the 216th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Houston, about 35 miles (57 km) away, which is where some providers serving Hitchcock are based.
Families in Hitchcock often end up using a provider from La Marque (3 miles, a larger centre), Bayou Vista (5 miles) and Santa Fe (6 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep pet birds.
1.4 million[3]
There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

The local attitude to cremation and burial
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. Among bird keepers, backyard chicken owners still often bury on their own land, while indoor parrot owners lean toward cremation. Both make sense. The practical difference is that cremation travels: if you move, a small urn comes with you, while a garden grave stays behind.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Hitchcock rather than as pet data.
Timing a bird's aftercare in Hitchcock's climate
Wherever you are, the first rule for a bird is simple: keep the body cool and bagged, away from food and from other birds. In warm weather that means the refrigerator within an hour or so; in cooler weather you have a little longer. Freeze only if you're sure you won't want a necropsy.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
Standard US pet insurance typically doesn't cover cremation[5], and few bird owners carry a policy anyway, so plan to pay directly. If you'd like to be present, some crematories charge a viewing fee; posted surcharges run from $25 to $350[6]. For a bird, a short private goodbye at the clinic is usually free.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Texas
There's no special licence or form for cremating one pet bird in Texas. What you do need to think about is the land: whose it is, what's under it and who might dig there later. And if birds have been dying without explanation, the first rule is to let a vet decide what happens next.

The first day, step by step
- Take a breath. If you found your bird on the cage floor with no warning, you haven't missed something obvious. Birds hide illness well.
- Put on gloves or wash your hands well afterwards. Wrap your bird loosely in a paper towel and place them in a small box or clean bag.
- Decide about a necropsy now. Freezing makes an examination harder, so use the fridge if there's any chance you'll want answers. If you're certain you won't, either works.
- Save feathers and the leg band now, while your bird is still with you. Once the cremation is done, neither can be got back.
- Check the birds left behind for fluffed feathers, tail bobbing or changed droppings, and call your avian vet if anything looks wrong.
- Choose private or communal cremation; if you want ashes back, find out how a body this small is recovered.
- Get the total in writing, including collection and the container, before your bird leaves your care.
Small, lasting ways to honor a bird
Hitchcock is a mainland Galveston County city on flat coastal prairie, between La Marque and Santa Fe and about half an hour's drive from the Galveston seawall. Lots tend to be larger here than in neighboring towns, and many families keep pets on an acre or more. Collection services usually come down from League City or the Houston side, so ask about the travel charge before you book.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Hitchcock actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Houston, about 35 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Hitchcock and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hitchcock?
Usually yes. La Marque is about 3 miles away, Bayou Vista is about 5 miles away and Santa Fe is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Hitchcock page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Should my other bird see the body?
Many keepers let a bonded companion see the body for a few minutes, and some birds seem calmer afterwards. There's no firm evidence either way, so do what feels right. If the death could be infectious, ask your vet first. Afterwards, keep routines steady and watch the survivor's appetite for a week.
Should I refrigerate or freeze my bird before cremation?
If there's any chance you'll want a necropsy, refrigerate your bird, because freezing damages the tissue a pathologist needs to examine. If you're sure you don't want one, freezing is fine and gives you as much time as you need. Either way, wrap your bird in a paper towel and seal them in a bag.
Can I bury my bird in my garden in Texas?
In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.
