Saying goodbye to your bird in Gonzales

Gonzales, Texas

Arranging a bird cremation in Gonzales

Many pets in Gonzales divide their days between a yard in town and the open country around it, and families here often have chickens, barn cats or rabbits too. Want to spread ashes at the family place or near the rivers? Talk to whoever owns the land first, and consider a small keepsake so you have somewhere to visit at home.

Gonzales is the seat of Gonzales County, a historic town where the Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers meet, roughly an hour's drive east of San Antonio and south of Austin. Homes range from old Victorian houses near the square to farmhouses surrounded by pasture. Pickup may need to come from San Antonio, Austin, Seguin or Victoria, so ask about travel charges and how soon a driver could get there.

In a smaller place like Gonzales, the local vet may see birds only now and then, and the nearest avian specialist could be in a larger centre such as Austin. After a death, your local clinic can still help: it can confirm the death, keep your bird refrigerated and send them on the crematory's regular route. Ask how often that route runs, because in towns it may be only once or twice a week.

Gonzales's population is around 7,239, the 222nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Austin, roughly 56 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Gonzales run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Shiner (18 miles), Yoakum (23 miles) and Lockhart (29 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Gonzales routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

55.7%[1]

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Cremation customs in Texas, and what they mean for birds

Families in Texas, where 55.7%[1] of deaths now end in cremation, often mix traditions: a burial for one relative, cremation for another. That flexibility helps with birds. You might cremate a parrot but bury a hen in the orchard, and both can feel right. Choose for each bird rather than setting a household rule.

How Gonzales's weather changes the first hours

If your parrot's cage stands near a window, Gonzales's summer sun can turn that corner into an oven by mid-afternoon. After a loss, move the remaining birds somewhere shaded and cooler, which is good practice through May, June, July, August and September anyway. A sudden death on a hot day is also a reason to consider a necropsy if other birds share the room.

Power cuts during Gonzales's hottest weeks can catch people out. If the fridge is off, a picnic cooler with ice packs keeps a small bird cold for many hours; wrap the bag so it isn't sitting in meltwater. Call the crematory or your vet and ask whether they can collect sooner, or drop your bird at a clinic with backup power.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does

Some Gonzales keepers weigh cremation against a pet cemetery. By our estimate, whole-body burial of a small pet costs ~$350[5] at the median of posted US price lists, more than double the private cremation band. Freeze-drying a small bird costs more again, about $650–$1,350[6] at one studio. Cremation is usually the least expensive way to keep something.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in Texas

Most rules that touch bird aftercare in Texas were written with dogs, cats or livestock in mind, but they apply to birds too. The ones worth knowing cover home burial, scattering ashes on public land and reporting suspected bird flu in poultry or aviary birds.

The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Gonzales.

We keep Texas's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Texas rules summary. Before a home burial in Gonzales, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

Your next few days, in order

  1. Book a quiet appointment. When euthanasia is what your avian vet recommends, request the earliest or latest time they offer; the waiting room is quieter then.
  2. Settle aftercare beforehand. Decide on private or communal cremation and tell the clinic in advance, so there are no forms to fill in afterwards.
  3. Choose what to keep now. You can collect molted feathers from the cage before you go, or ask the vet afterwards to snip a few feathers and take off the leg band.
  4. Bring something familiar, such as a towel from the cage or a favorite perch, so your bird is calm in your hands.
  5. Decide whether a flockmate comes along. A bonded partner can travel in a carrier and be there, or you can let them see the body once you're home; keepers do both.
  6. Leave when you're ready. Staff will store your bird in their cooler until collection day.

Feathers, songs and other ways to remember

Gonzales has long, very hot summers, with August afternoons near 98 degrees, while January nights sit near forty. Should a pet die in that heat, place them on a towel in a shaded room with the air running and have them at a vet or picked up before dark. Spring and fall downpours can send the rivers over low crossings, so check your route first.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Gonzales actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Austin, about 56 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Gonzales and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gonzales?

Usually yes. Shiner is about 18 miles away, Yoakum is about 23 miles away and Lockhart is about 29 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Gonzales?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 98°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Why does the Gonzales page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is a necropsy worth it for my bird?

It's most worth it when other birds share your home or aviary. A necropsy can identify infections, toxins such as zinc or overheated non-stick fumes, and conditions that could affect the survivors. It has to happen before cremation, so talk to your avian vet within a day or two and keep your bird refrigerated meanwhile.

Will I get any ashes back from a budgie or finch?

Usually a little, but not much. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a 35 g budgie leaves a gram or two, and a finch may leave less. Ask whether the provider uses a tray or dish for small bodies so the remains can be recovered, and expect a vial or tiny container.
