Crown Point, Indiana
Pet birds in Crown Point: the local picture
Crown Point is the Lake County seat, known for its old courthouse on the town square, and lies about 35 miles southeast of Chicago. The historic streets near the square hold older frame houses, while the edges have grown into newer subdivisions with larger lots. Providers covering Northwest Indiana usually reach Crown Point without trouble, but homes out past the city limits may be charged extra mileage, so ask.
Crown Point hosts the Lake County Fair each summer, and the fairgrounds, square and town parks are part of daily life for many families with animals. If you want a spot for scattering ashes, private land with the owner's consent is simplest; parks and public grounds often have rules. A flower bed or a potted plant at home is a gentle alternative that stays close.
If the nearest crematory is some distance from Crown Point, holding your bird for a few days is not a problem. If you're sure you don't want a necropsy, wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and freeze them; that buys you all the time you need. If you might want answers about why they died, refrigerate instead and call a vet within a day or two.
Crown Point is home to about 35,616 people, the 28th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 35 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Crown Point run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Merrillville (5 miles), St. John (7 miles) and Schererville (7 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Crown Point too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Why local cremation habits matter for your bird
In Indiana, 56.5%[1] of the dead are cremated, so most families know someone who has chosen either path. Ask them what they valued afterwards. People who buried often mention having a place to visit; people who cremated often mention being able to keep someone close through a move. Both apply to a pet bird.
We take the Indiana rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Crown Point, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How Crown Point's weather changes the first hours
When January lows fall to about 15°F, many Crown Point homes run space heaters and ovens harder. Some heaters and non-stick cookware give off fumes when overheated that are dangerous to birds, so a sudden winter death in a warm kitchen is worth mentioning to your vet. A necropsy can show whether fumes played a part; refrigerate rather than freeze if you want to know.
Backyard hens around Crown Point get through 5 freezing months with a dry, draft-free coop. If one dies in winter, the ground may be too hard to dig. Many keepers wrap the bird and keep her in a freezer until the thaw, or choose cremation instead. Either is fine for a hen who died of old age; after sudden deaths, call a vet first.

The real bill for a small bird, line by line
Some Crown Point keepers weigh cremation against a pet cemetery. By our estimate, whole-body burial of a small pet costs ~$350[5] at the median of posted US price lists, more than double the private cremation band. Freeze-drying a small bird costs more again, about $650–$1,350[6] at one studio. Cremation is usually the least expensive way to keep something.
The Indiana price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Indiana
For a single pet bird who died of old age or a known illness, the decisions are yours. Backyard flocks and aviaries are different: a cluster of sudden deaths may have to be reported to the animal health authority before any bird is buried or cremated. Here's the local picture for Indiana.

Start with the Indiana rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Crown Point's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your next few days, in order
- Book a quiet appointment. When euthanasia is what your avian vet recommends, request the earliest or latest time they offer; the waiting room is quieter then.
- Settle aftercare beforehand. Decide on private or communal cremation and tell the clinic in advance, so there are no forms to fill in afterwards.
- Choose what to keep now. Ask the vet to trim a few feathers and remove the leg band after the procedure, or gather molted feathers at home first.
- Bring something familiar, a cage towel or the perch they like best, to help your bird feel settled while you hold them.
- Decide whether a flockmate comes along. Some keepers bring a bonded partner in a carrier; others prefer to show them the body at home.
- Leave when you're ready. Staff will store your bird in their cooler until collection day.
Feathers, songs and other ways to remember
Five months of freezing weather, November to March, give Crown Point families some breathing room if a pet dies on a winter night: a wrapped body in an unheated garage will usually keep until morning. In the humid July stretch, when highs reach the mid-80s, the opposite applies. Keep the air conditioning on, surround your pet with cold packs wrapped in towels, and arrange pickup quickly.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 35 miles from Crown Point) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Crown Point?
Usually yes. Merrillville is about 5 miles away, St. John is about 7 miles away and Schererville is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Indiana?
For people, yes: about 56.5%[1] of Indiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Crown Point follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How does Crown Point's weather affect bird aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Crown Point, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can I keep my bird's feathers?
Yes, and many keepers treasure them most. Feathers must be taken before cremation, so choose a few from the tail or wings, or gather molted ones from the cage. If an infection was suspected, wait until your vet has ruled it out before handling feathers from the body.
Can a vet put my bird to sleep at home near Crown Point?
Sometimes. Mobile vets who offer home euthanasia mostly see dogs and cats, but some will visit for a bird, especially an elderly parrot who is stressed by travel. Ask whether they're comfortable with the species, and whether they can transport your bird to a crematory afterwards. If not, your avian vet can usually offer a quiet appointment instead.
