There's no special licence or form for cremating one pet bird in Illinois. What you do need to think about is the land: whose it is, what's under it and who might dig there later. And if birds have been dying without explanation, the first rule is to let a vet decide what happens next.

- Ask the clinic to pause. If your bird died during treatment or surgery, ask that nothing be sent for disposal until you've decided.
- Request the notes. A short summary of what happened helps if you later want a second opinion or a necropsy.
- Decide on a necropsy within a day or two. Until then, ask the clinic to keep your bird in the fridge rather than the freezer.
- Confirm private cremation in writing when you're expecting ashes back, and find out the name of the crematory the clinic sends to.
- Settle the bill separately. The cost of care and the cost of cremation usually appear as separate items; get both figures first.
- Arrange to collect the remains from the clinic, or ask whether they can be posted to you.
Memorials that suit a bird
Chicago winters are long and hard, with the ground usually frozen from December into March, which rules out backyard burial for months at a time even where it's allowed. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Chicago?

Should my other bird see the body?
Many keepers let a bonded companion see the body for a few minutes, and some birds seem calmer afterwards. There's no firm evidence either way, so do what feels right. If the death could be infectious, ask your vet first. Afterwards, keep routines steady and watch the survivor's appetite for a week.
Can my bird be cremated with a favorite toy or perch?
Usually not. Metal, plastic and treated wood can damage equipment or add residue to the remains, so crematories normally remove them. A small piece of untreated wood or paper may be allowed; ask first. Most families keep the toy instead and display it beside the container, which gives them more to hold.
Can I bury a hen or small bird when the ground is frozen?
Often not until the thaw. Many keepers wrap the bird, keep them in a freezer and bury them in spring, or choose cremation and scatter or bury the remains later. Both are fine for a bird who died of old age. After sudden deaths in a flock, call a vet before either.
