Eustis, Florida
Who helps with a pet bird's aftercare around Eustis
Eustis summers are hot, with July highs around 92F, and the coldest January nights reach the upper 40s. When a companion animal dies at home in the warm months, the practical steps are simple: find the coolest room, put a blanket beneath them and add something cold nearby. Arrange collection that day, or ask your vet whether their clinic can hold your pet until morning.
Evenings on the lakefront at Ferran Park are part of life in Eustis, and many pets spent their days watching boats and birds on the water. Some families choose to scatter a little ash on the lake, following local rules. Others keep the remains at home and plant a crape myrtle or a camellia in the yard, marking the spot with a small stone.
Backyard hens are part of everyday life around Eustis, and many keepers have buried birds on their own land for years. That's still a reasonable choice for a hen who died of old age. The exception is a cluster of sudden deaths, especially in spring or fall when wild birds are on the move: call your vet or the animal health office first, because bird flu rules can decide what happens to the bodies.
Eustis's population is around 25,483, the 102nd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Eustis are based about 29 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Tavares (4 miles), Mount Dora (4 miles) and Umatilla (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Eustis too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep pet birds.
1.4 million[3]
There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation customs in Florida, and what they mean for birds
Locally, 72.5%[1] of people choose cremation, so a written plan for someone's own funeral is a familiar idea to many families. The same habit suits parrot owners. A bird who may outlive you deserves a written plan: who takes them, which avian vet they see and what you'd like done when they die. Keep it with your own papers so it's found.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Eustis, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Eustis weather, birds and timing
Humid summer air in Eustis makes a small body break down faster than people expect, so the fridge beats a cool closet from about July onward. Double-bag your bird, add a paper towel to absorb moisture and label the bag clearly if others share the refrigerator. That buys two or three days, which is usually enough to arrange collection.
Outdoor aviaries around Eustis take the brunt of May, June, July, August and September. When a finch or canary dies in the flight, remove the body promptly, because heat and flies make a small carcass a hygiene problem within hours. Check water, shade and airflow for the rest of the flock, and keep a note of the temperature that day for your vet.

What bird cremation costs in Eustis
By our estimate, across the markets we compared, private cremation costs ~2.0x[5] as much as communal. For a dog that gap can be hundreds of dollars; for a bird it's often less than a tank of gas. So let the choice rest on whether returned remains matter to you, not on the saving. For most families, the extra is modest.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Florida
Bird flu has changed what's expected of backyard keepers in Florida. A single elderly hen is still your own business, but unexplained losses among several birds can trigger reporting duties, and officials may then choose how the carcasses are dealt with. Here's what to know before you bury or cremate.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Eustis may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Your next few days, in order
- If several backyard birds died suddenly, stop and call your vet or the animal health authority before moving or cremating them.
- Keep your bird cool. Bag them and put them in the refrigerator within an hour in warm weather.
- Call your avian vet, or any local clinic if your avian vet is far away. They can confirm the death and store your bird.
- Ask your questions: is the cremation private, is a tray used for small bodies and when will the remains come back?
- Decide who takes your bird there: yourself, the vet, or the provider's pickup service.
- Choose a container sized for grams, not pounds. A small keepsake urn, a locket or a glass vial is usually plenty.

Questions people ask
Does the Eustis climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Eustis page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 29 miles from Eustis) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Eustis?
Usually yes. Tavares is about 4 miles away, Mount Dora is about 4 miles away and Umatilla is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How is a bird's cremation different from a dog's or cat's?
The process is the same, but the scale changes everything. A bird's bones are light and many are hollow, so very little remains. Good providers use a tray or small dish so remains aren't lost, and return them in a container sized for grams. Ask how they handle small bodies before you book.
Do pet crematories near Eustis handle backyard chickens?
Most companion-animal crematories accept pet hens, ducks and pigeons, usually in their smallest weight band. Some rural providers are more used to poultry than city ones. Mention the species and how the bird died when you call, because a sudden death in a flock may need a vet's input first.
