Cruise days, holiday weekends and launches can jam traffic on the island, so settle on a pickup time with some margin.
July in Cocoa Beach tops out near 91F and winter lows sit around 51F, which means cooling falls to you. Condo units with west-facing glass can heat up quickly. Carry your pet to the room where the thermostat reads lowest, rest them on a thick beach towel, and wedge cloth-wrapped cold packs along their side. Ahead of a hurricane the State Road 520 causeway fills early, so do not wait to phone.
Backyard hens are part of everyday life around Cocoa Beach, and many keepers have buried birds on their own land for years. That's still a reasonable choice for a hen who died of old age. Cremation customs in Florida, and what they mean for birds
With roughly 72.5%[1] of people in Florida cremated, many families already have an urn on a shelf. Some choose to keep a bird's remains beside a relative's, or to have them placed in a grandparent's grave later where cemetery rules allow. It's worth asking the cemetery before promising anyone, since rules on adding pet remains differ widely.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Cocoa Beach, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and drafts in Cocoa Beach
During May, June, July, August and September, backyard flocks around Cocoa Beach are most at risk. Hens pant, spread their wings and stop laying when a coop overheats. If a hen dies in a heat wave, move her into the shade, bag her and chill her promptly. If several birds die at once, don't assume it was only the heat; call a vet before arranging cremation.

What the law says about a pet bird in Florida
If your bird was a protected or licensed species, such as some native parrots, there may be paperwork to close after a death. For ordinary pet species, the rules in Florida are mostly about where remains may go. Here's a short summary, with links to the official detail.

A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Use the word "died" rather than softer phrases such as "went to sleep", which can confuse young children.
- Let them see the bird if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth. Many children find it helps; don't insist if they don't.
- Give them a job: they might pick out a feather to save, make a drawing, or decide which shelf the container goes on.
- Keep your bird refrigerated while the family decides between a small burial and cremation.
- Explain what cremation means in plain words: the body is turned into a small amount of soft ash that comes home.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Let your child feel the loss for a while, and when another bird comes up, let them help decide.

Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 49 miles from Cocoa Beach) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Cocoa Beach climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cocoa Beach?
Usually yes. Merritt Island is about 3 miles away, Cape Canaveral is about 5 miles away and Rockledge is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My parrot is old. Should I plan ahead?
It helps. Decide now who would take your parrot if they outlive you, and write down your wishes for aftercare: private or communal, feathers to keep, which vet to call. Some parrots live for decades, so a plan written years ahead is not morbid, just practical.
What should I do with a dead wild bird I found in Cocoa Beach?
Don't take it to a pet crematory. Avoid touching it with bare hands, and check your state wildlife agency's guidance: many ask the public to report dead wild birds, especially waterfowl and raptors, because of bird flu surveillance. If you must move it, use gloves and a bag. Keep pet birds and backyard hens away from the spot.
