Windsor, Colorado
Losing a bird in Windsor: where to start
Windsor is a fast-growing town of about 44,000 between Fort Collins and Greeley, sitting mostly in Weld County with a slice in Larimer. Denver is about 51 miles south. Neighborhoods range from older homes near Windsor Lake and the historic downtown to newer subdivisions and golf-course communities spreading east and west. When asking about aftercare, say which end of Windsor you live in, since both Fort Collins and Greeley are close.
Windsor Lake sits right in the middle of town, and the Poudre River Trail runs along the Cache la Poudre toward Greeley. These places are part of daily routines here, and some people like to remember a pet near water they shared. Others keep the ashes in an urn on a mantel or bury them beneath a garden shrub. Nothing needs to be settled in a hurry.
Because many birds from Windsor travel to a crematory in a bigger town, the remains can take a week or two longer to come back than in a city. What returns from a small bird is tiny and light, so some providers can send it by a tracked postal or courier service rather than waiting for the next clinic run. Ask whether that's an option if the round trip is long.
With roughly 43,840 residents, Windsor is the 22nd-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Denver, roughly 51 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Windsor run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Greeley (9 miles, a larger centre), Loveland (10 miles) and Fort Collins (12 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
77.4%[1]
The NFDA projected Colorado's cremation rate at 77.4% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep pet birds.
1.4 million[3]
There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation and burial
Locally, 77.4%[1] of people choose cremation, so a written plan for someone's own funeral is a familiar idea to many families. The same habit suits parrot owners. A bird who may outlive you deserves a written plan: who takes them, which avian vet they see and what you'd like done when they die. Keep it with your own papers so it's found.
That Colorado rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Windsor only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What Windsor's seasons mean for your bird's aftercare
Snow and ice in January, February, March, November and December can slow collection routes around Windsor. For a bird that's rarely a problem: a small body keeps well in a refrigerator for a couple of days and in a freezer for much longer. If you're waiting out a storm, bag your bird securely, label the bag and keep it well away from food.
Winter in Windsor keeps many birds indoors with the windows shut, and air quality suffers. A bird who dies suddenly during January, February, March, November and December may have been affected by something in the air, from a gas leak to a new air freshener. Open windows, move surviving birds to fresh air and tell your vet what's been running in the house.

The real bill for a small bird, line by line
US providers rarely publish bird-specific prices, so the honest guide is the small-pet band. PetMD puts group cremation from about $50 and private cremation from about $100[5]. For a bird, remains weigh only 3-5% of body weight[4], which is why many Windsor keepers skip the large urn and choose a vial or keepsake container.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Colorado
People are often surprised to learn that a pet bird after death is covered by the same broad rules as other animal remains. In practice, that rarely affects a family with a budgie. It matters more for backyard flocks, aviaries and anyone thinking of burying on rented or public land in Colorado.
Colorado keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Windsor.
The Colorado page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Windsor's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your next few days, in order
- If a sitter calls while you're away, ask them to put on gloves, bag your bird and place the bag at the back of the fridge.
- Phone your vet from wherever you are. Explain who is caring for the birds and ask whether they can take your bird in.
- Protect the other birds. Have the sitter keep the room calm and warm, and check that the remaining birds are eating and their droppings look normal.
- Don't agree to anything by text you haven't read. A clinic can hold your bird until you return and sign.
- Once you're back, pick private or communal cremation, and decide whether a necropsy makes sense.
- Thank the sitter. Discovering a dead pet is upsetting for the person who found them, and they'll want to hear how it ended.
Small, lasting ways to honor a bird
Windsor's winters can be cold, with January lows around 15 and frost from November into March, while July brings dry afternoons in the upper 80s. Severe storms are part of life here: in May 2008 a strong tornado tore through town. After a summer death at home, move your pet to a basement or tile floor away from sunny windows; in winter, an unheated garage serves well overnight.

Questions people ask
How do Colorado attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Colorado human cremation rate at about 77.4%[1]. We show it on the Windsor page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Windsor?
The closest communities we cover are Greeley (about 9 miles), Loveland (about 10 miles) and Fort Collins (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Windsor too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How does Windsor's weather affect bird aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Windsor, with average highs around 88°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I have to travel to Denver to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Denver (roughly 51 miles from Windsor) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How much does bird cremation cost in Windsor?
Most US providers put birds in their smallest weight band, which CareCredit lists at about $100 to $175 for private cremation and $45 to $75 for communal, for pets up to 30 lb. Collection, after-hours fees and an urn add to that. Ask any Windsor provider for a written total that names the species.
Are my hen's ashes safe to scatter if she had an illness?
Cremation reaches temperatures that leave only mineral remains, so the ashes themselves don't carry infection. The risk sits with the body before cremation, which is why a vet should advise after unexplained deaths in a flock. Once remains come back, you can scatter or bury them as you would any others, following local rules on land and water.
