Daejeon, South Korea
What bird aftercare is like in Daejeon
In Korea, burying a pet in a park, on a hillside or in public ground is not an allowed option, and many owners are surprised to learn it. The usual choices are a licensed pet funeral facility for cremation, or arranging aftercare through your vet. If you want your pet's ashes back, make sure the facility offers an individual cremation and ask whether you can attend.
Most Daejeon families live in large apartment complexes, and a pet that dies at home will usually need to be carried down in a lift and out past a security desk. Licensed pet funeral facilities in Korea are often located outside city centres, so collection from your home, or a drive with your pet to the facility, is the usual route. Ask how far the facility is and whether they collect.
Traffic across Daejeon can turn a short trip into an hour, which is one reason many keepers here hand the whole job to their vet. That works well, but it pays to say exactly what you want: private or communal, feathers set aside, the leg band returned. Clinics that send dozens of cats and dogs a week to the same crematory may tick the default box unless your wishes are on the form.
About 1,500,000 people live in Daejeon.
For a second opinion on price, Daegu (76 miles), Gangnam (82 miles) and Incheon (85 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Daejeon routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Why local cremation habits matter for your bird
Locally, 92.43%[1] of people choose cremation, so a written plan for someone's own funeral is a familiar idea to many families. The same habit suits parrot owners. A bird who may outlive you deserves a written plan: who takes them, which avian vet they see and what you'd like done when they die. Keep it with your own papers so it's found.

Timing a bird's aftercare in Daejeon's climate
Whatever the weather in Daejeon, a small bird's body needs cool storage within a few hours. Keep a couple of zip bags and paper towels somewhere you can find them, so a hard moment doesn't turn into a search through the kitchen drawers.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does
A columbarium niche is an ongoing cost that's easy to miss. One Singapore provider lists niches from SGD 300 for the first year[5], on top of the cremation. For a bird's tiny container, ask whether a smaller niche or shared shelf is available near Daejeon, or keep the remains at home instead.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in South Korea
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in South Korea.
In South Korea, burying pets on land is generally not permitted, so families use a licensed pet funeral provider or arrange disposal through a vet. For a bird, ask a registered pet funeral business for individual cremation, confirm the remains are returned and check whether memorial stones or a small urn are included in the price.
Your next few days, in order
- Tell your child simply and truthfully. Say the bird has died, use that word, and avoid phrases like "went to sleep".
- Let them see the bird if they want to, tucked into a soft cloth. For many children this is comforting, but never push a child who would rather not.
- Give them a job: choosing a feather to keep, drawing a picture, or picking where the container will sit.
- Keep your bird refrigerated while the family decides between a small burial and cremation.
- Explain what cremation means without jargon: the bird's body becomes a little soft ash, and that ash comes back to the family.
- Wait before replacing the bird. Let your child feel the loss for a while, and when another bird comes up, let them help decide.
Remembering your bird in Daejeon
Daejeon's summers are hot and sticky, with the monsoon arriving in July, while winters are cold and dry. On a humid summer day, run the air conditioning and slip a frozen gel pack, wrapped in a thin cloth, beneath your pet; on a January night an unheated veranda room is often cool enough for a few hours. Because most facilities are outside the city, check the drive time before setting out, especially in heavy monsoon rain.

Questions people ask
How do South Korea attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the South Korea human cremation rate at about 92.43%[1]. We show it on the Daejeon page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Daejeon?
Usually yes. Daegu is about 76 miles away, Gangnam is about 82 miles away and Incheon is about 85 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How is a bird's cremation different from a dog's or cat's?
The process is the same, but the scale changes everything. A bird's bones are light and many are hollow, so very little remains. Good providers use a tray or small dish so remains aren't lost, and return them in a container sized for grams. Ask how they handle small bodies before you book.
Can my bird be cremated with a favorite toy or perch?
Usually not. Metal, plastic and treated wood can damage equipment or add residue to the remains, so crematories normally remove them. A small piece of untreated wood or paper may be allowed; ask first. Most families keep the toy instead and display it beside the container, which gives them more to hold.
Can I bury my bird in my garden in South Korea?
In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.
How much does bird cremation cost near Daejeon?
Prices depend on the provider and whether you want the remains back. Birds fall in the smallest weight band everywhere, so individual cremation typically costs about the same as for a very small cat. Ask for a quote in local currency that includes collection, the cremation and the container.
