When your bird dies in Venice: aftercare options

Venice, Veneto

Losing a bird in Venice: where to start

Venetian summers are hot, sticky and full of mosquitoes, and winters bring fog, damp and the acqua alta tides that flood parts of the islands. In July or August, a pet's body needs cooling within the first hours: close the shutters, use the coolest tiled floor in the flat, and keep wrapped ice packs against it. When a high tide is forecast, allow extra time for any trip across the city.

Italian vets commonly arrange pet cremation, and many Venetian families choose an individual cremation so they can keep the ashes at home. Collective cremation costs less, but nothing is returned. For a family in the historic center, ask whether the provider collects by boat or whether you need to bring your pet to a mainland meeting point, and get the full price, including transport, in writing.

A lot of the birds in Venice are budgies and cockatiels bought for children, and the first loss often lands on a school night. It's fine to keep your bird refrigerated for a day or two while the family talks it over. Children cope better when they're included in small decisions, such as choosing a feather to keep or picking a spot for the container, than when a bird simply disappears.

With roughly 261,000 residents, Venice is the largest of the 3 Veneto communities we cover.

Our pages for Padua (21 miles), Verona (64 miles) and Trieste (72 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Venice as well.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026; we only apply it to this.

A bird at home in Venice

Cremation customs in Italy, and what they mean for birds

With about 38.16%[1] of people cremated, Italy leans toward burial, and pet crematories can be spread thinly. That can mean a longer wait for a bird's remains and fewer providers who see birds often. It's worth asking a crematory directly how many birds they handle and whether they use a tray or dish for small bodies.

The Italy figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Timing a bird's aftercare in Venice's climate

Cremated remains aren't affected by weather, so there's no rush to scatter or bury them. Many bird keepers wait for a calm, dry day, sometimes the anniversary of the day their bird first came home.

Bird cremation prices for Venice keepers

Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, and a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250[5], similar to an individual cremation. For a bird, some families near Venice combine the two: cremate, then place the small container in a shared urn field. Ask the cemetery whether it takes urns from other providers.

The full price table by size is on our Veneto page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Veneto

Scattering a bird's ashes is rarely regulated in the way people fear, because the amount is so small. Burial is where rules bite: property ownership, leases, homeowners' associations and disease controls. Below is what applies in Veneto, plus the office to call if you're unsure.

Italy has about 12.9 million[7] ornamental birds, the most in Europe, so vets here are used to canaries, budgies and parrots. Pet crematoria offer individual (cremazione individuale) and collective cremation; only individual returns the remains. If backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, call a vet or the local ASL veterinary service before arranging aftercare.

What to do when your bird dies in Venice

  1. If several backyard birds died suddenly, stop and call your vet or the animal health authority before moving or cremating them.
  2. Keep your bird cool. In warm weather, aim to have them bagged and in the fridge inside an hour.
  3. Call your avian vet, or any local clinic if your avian vet is far away. They can confirm the death and store your bird.
  4. Ask your questions: will my bird be cremated alone, do you use a tray for tiny bodies, and how long until I get the remains?
  5. Decide who takes your bird there: you, your vet or the provider's collection service.
  6. Choose a container sized for grams, not pounds. A vial, locket or keepsake urn usually fits.

Remembering your bird in Venice

The comune of Venice covers both the historic island city and the mainland districts of Mestre and Marghera, where most residents actually live. In the historic center there are no cars, so moving a pet's body means carrying it through narrow calli and over stepped bridges, or arranging transport by boat. From a Mestre apartment, a car trip to a vet is simpler. Say which part of Venice you are in when you ask for options.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Venice follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Venice?

Usually yes. Padua is about 21 miles away, Verona is about 64 miles away and Trieste is about 72 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

My parrot is old. Should I plan ahead?

It helps. Decide now who would take your parrot if they outlive you, and write down your wishes for aftercare: private or communal, feathers to keep, which vet to call. Some parrots live for decades, so a plan written years ahead is not morbid, just practical.

Are my hen's ashes safe to scatter if she had an illness?

Cremation reaches temperatures that leave only mineral remains, so the ashes themselves don't carry infection. The risk sits with the body before cremation, which is why a vet should advise after unexplained deaths in a flock. Once remains come back, you can scatter or bury them as you would any others, following local rules on land and water.

Can my bird be cremated with a favorite toy or perch?

Usually not. Metal, plastic and treated wood can damage equipment or add residue to the remains, so crematories normally remove them. A small piece of untreated wood or paper may be allowed; ask first. Most families keep the toy instead and display it beside the container, which gives them more to hold.

How long does it take to get my bird's remains back?

Often one to two weeks, sometimes sooner in a large city. In smaller towns where birds travel to a regional crematory, it can take longer. Because a bird's remains are so small and light, some providers can post them with tracking. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
