What the law says about a pet bird in Lombardy
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Lombardy.
Italy has about 12.9 million[7] ornamental birds, the most in Europe, so vets here are used to canaries, budgies and parrots. Pet crematoria offer individual (cremazione individuale) and collective cremation; only individual returns the remains. If backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, call a vet or the local ASL veterinary service before arranging aftercare.

- Remove the bird from the aviary promptly and bag them, wearing gloves.
- Look for a pattern. Note the date, the species and anything unusual, such as fluffed birds or wet droppings among the rest.
- Call your vet if more than one bird is unwell, and raise the question of a necropsy: what it finds in this bird might save the rest.
- Decide how you want small birds handled. Many aviary keepers choose communal cremation for finches and keep a feather or two.
- If one bird was special, don't be shy about it; nobody will think it odd to arrange a private cremation for one canary.
- Clean feeders and water dishes and check the aviary for gaps where wild birds or rodents could get in.
- Keep a simple log of losses through the year; it helps your vet spot trends.
