Arranging a parrot or bird cremation in Genoa

Genoa, Liguria

Losing a bird in Genoa: where to start

Genoa's Mediterranean climate brings warm, humid summers and mild winters, but autumn can bring intense rain and flash floods that close roads with little warning. In summer, cool your pet quickly with towels and cool packs and keep shutters closed. If a weather alert is in force, it is safer to keep your pet cool and wait for roads to reopen.

The seafront promenade at Nervi, the parks of the old villas and the forts on the ridges above the city are Genoa's favorite outdoor spaces, but for most pets here life happens on balconies, terraces and in bright upper-floor rooms. In Italy, pet cremation has grown in recent years alongside a traditional preference for burial. Rules on burying a pet on private land vary by region and municipality, so check before digging.

A city the size of Genoa usually has more than one pet crematory within reach and emergency hospitals that stay open overnight. What it often lacks is enough avian vets. Birds are a small share of most clinics' work, so many Genoa keepers drive across town to the one practice that sees parrots. That practice is usually the right first call after a death too, because it will know which local crematory handles very small bodies carefully.

Genoa is home to about 583,000 people, the largest of the 2 Liguria communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Portofino (15 miles), Milan (74 miles, a larger centre) and Turin (77 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Genoa routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial or cremation? How Italy tends to decide

Burial remains the norm in Italy; only 38.16%[1] of residents are cremated when they die, and many families have a spot in the yard where past pets rest. A bird fits easily beside them. If you'd rather cremate, you won't be the first: small-pet cremation is offered through most vets, even where human cremation is uncommon.

That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Genoa only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Heat, cold and drafts in Genoa

Whatever the weather in Genoa, a small bird's body needs cool storage within a few hours. Keep a couple of zip bags and paper towels somewhere you can find them, so a hard moment doesn't turn into a search through the kitchen drawers.

Why cremating a small bird costs what it does

A German consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375[5]. A bird will sit at the bottom of those ranges. In Genoa, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually your first contact, but you can approach a pet crematorium directly for a clearer price.

The Liguria price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial, scattering and bird flu rules in Liguria

Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Liguria.

Italy has about 12.9 million[7] ornamental birds, the most in Europe, so vets here are used to canaries, budgies and parrots. Pet crematoria offer individual (cremazione individuale) and collective cremation; only individual returns the remains. If backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, call a vet or the local ASL veterinary service before arranging aftercare.

What to do when your bird dies in Genoa

  1. Check the rest of the flock first. If other hens look unwell or have also died, call a vet before touching anything else.
  2. Move her somewhere cool and secure, out of reach of dogs, cats and foxes, in a sealed bag.
  3. Think about age and history. A hen who was old or slowing down for weeks is a very different case from one who was fine yesterday.
  4. Choose burial or cremation. Either works when an old hen has quietly faded; if she died without warning, hold off until a vet has advised you.
  5. Clean the spot where she died and replace the bedding, wearing gloves.
  6. Keep an eye on the others over the next seven days; eggs, eating and droppings are the first sign something is passing through the flock.

Remembering your bird in Genoa

Genoa climbs steeply from the port into the hills, with apartment buildings stacked on slopes and connected by stairways, narrow alleys called caruggi, funiculars and public lifts. Many households have no car, and parking near the door is rare. When you ask for aftercare options, describe how to reach your building, which floor you are on and whether a vehicle can get close, so collection can be planned.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Genoa follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Genoa?

Usually yes. Portofino is about 15 miles away, Milan is about 74 miles away and Turin is about 77 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can my bird be cremated with a favorite toy or perch?

Usually not. Metal, plastic and treated wood can damage equipment or add residue to the remains, so crematories normally remove them. A small piece of untreated wood or paper may be allowed; ask first. Most families keep the toy instead and display it beside the container, which gives them more to hold.

How long does it take to get my bird's remains back?

Often one to two weeks, sometimes sooner in a large city. In smaller towns where birds travel to a regional crematory, it can take longer. Because a bird's remains are so small and light, some providers can post them with tracking. Ask for an expected return date when you book.

Can two bonded birds be cremated together?

Yes, if you ask. Many providers can cremate two birds in one private cremation, but the remains will be mixed. If you'd prefer separate containers, ask for separate cremations and clear labeling. Some families keep the first bird's remains and ask for the partner's to be added later.

What size urn does a bird need?

Smaller than most people expect. A budgie or finch needs only a vial or locket, a cockatiel a keepsake urn, and even a large macaw rarely needs more than a few cubic inches. A backyard hen returns a little more. Our ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your bird's species and weight.
