Saying goodbye to your bird in Bari

Bari, Apulia

How bird keepers in Bari usually handle a loss

Cats, birds, rabbits and small animals share many Bari apartments, often with a balcony rather than a garden. Home burial is rarely practical in the city, so cremation has become a common choice for pets even though burial is still more usual for people in southern Italy. Ask whether the cremation is individual, with ashes returned, or collective, and get the full price in writing.

Bari is a city of apartment blocks, from the narrow lanes of Bari Vecchia to the grid of the Murat district and the newer neighbourhoods spreading along the coast. Parking is difficult in the centre and many older buildings have small lifts or none at all. When you get in touch, say which floor you're on and whether a van can stop nearby, so collection from the building is realistic.

If your parrot is elderly and still with you, Bari is a good place to plan ahead calmly. Ask your avian vet which crematory they use, what a private cremation costs for your bird's weight and whether feathers or the leg band can be set aside first. Writing those answers on a card by the cage means nobody has to guess on a difficult day.

Bari's population is around 326,000.

Our pages for Naples (137 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bari as well.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep pet birds.

1.4 million[3]

There are about 1.4 million indoor pet birds in the UK (2.7% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation and burial

Burial remains the norm in Italy; only 38.16%[1] of residents are cremated when they die, and many families have a spot in the yard where past pets rest. A bird fits easily beside them. If you'd rather cremate, you won't be the first: small-pet cremation is offered through most vets, even where human cremation is uncommon.

Source for the Italy number: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Bari, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Bari weather, birds and timing

Weather affects bird keepers in two ways: heat and drafts are common triggers for stress and illness, and frozen or waterlogged ground can make burial difficult. Your vet in Bari knows the local seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

The real bill for a small bird, line by line

Europe keeps about 48.2 million[5] ornamental birds, but few crematoria publish bird-only prices. Some do list a band for the smallest pets: an Irish crematorium quotes individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[6]. Ask providers serving Bari whether they have a similar small-animal price.

Before you dig or scatter in Apulia

For a single pet bird who died of old age or a known illness, the decisions are yours. Backyard flocks and aviaries are different: a cluster of sudden deaths may have to be reported to the animal health authority before any bird is buried or cremated. Here's the local picture for Apulia.

Italy has about 12.9 million[8] ornamental birds, the most in Europe, so vets here are used to canaries, budgies and parrots. Pet crematoria offer individual (cremazione individuale) and collective cremation; only individual returns the remains. If backyard hens or aviary birds die suddenly, call a vet or the local ASL veterinary service before arranging aftercare.

Step by step: from the cage floor to the urn

  1. If a sitter calls while you're away, ask them to put on gloves, bag your bird and place the bag at the back of the fridge.
  2. Phone your vet from wherever you are. Tell them who's looking after the flock and find out if the clinic will hold your bird until you're home.
  3. Protect the other birds. Ask the sitter to watch the survivors' food and droppings and to keep the room warm and quiet.
  4. Don't agree to anything by text you haven't read. A clinic can hold your bird until you return and sign.
  5. Once you're back, pick private or communal cremation, and decide whether a necropsy makes sense.
  6. Thank the sitter. Finding a pet who has died is hard for them too, and knowing what happened next helps.

Small, lasting ways to honor a bird

Bari has long, hot summers and mild winters on the Adriatic coast, and hot southerly winds can push temperatures up further in summer. In that heat, a pet's body needs to be kept cool within a few hours: close the shutters, lay your pet on a towel in the coolest room, and place cold packs wrapped in cloth along the back and belly. Decide the same day in summer.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bari follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is it safe to handle my bird's body?

Usually, with simple care. Wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly, avoid shaking feathers near your face and keep other birds away from the body. Some infections, such as psittacosis, can pass from birds to people, so if several birds are ill, call your vet before handling them.

Do pet crematories near Bari handle backyard chickens?

Most companion-animal crematories accept pet hens, ducks and pigeons, usually in their smallest weight band. Some rural providers are more used to poultry than city ones. Mention the species and how the bird died when you call, because a sudden death in a flock may need a vet's input first.

Is a necropsy worth it for my bird?

It's most worth it when other birds share your home or aviary. A necropsy can identify infections, toxins such as zinc or overheated non-stick fumes, and conditions that could affect the survivors. It has to happen before cremation, so talk to your avian vet within a day or two and keep your bird refrigerated meanwhile.

Can a vet put my bird to sleep at home near Bari?

Sometimes. Mobile vets who offer home euthanasia mostly see dogs and cats, but some will visit for a bird, especially an elderly parrot who is stressed by travel. Ask whether they're comfortable with the species, and whether they can transport your bird to a crematory afterwards. If not, your avian vet can usually offer a quiet appointment instead.

Can two bonded birds be cremated together?

Yes, if you ask. Many providers can cremate two birds in one private cremation, but the remains will be mixed. If you'd prefer separate containers, ask for separate cremations and clear labeling. Some families keep the first bird's remains and ask for the partner's to be added later.
