Bird Cremation in Delhi: what to know
Children in Delhi often meet death for the first time through a budgie, finch or hen. Aftercare is a chance to show them it can be handled with care. Our city pages include steps written with families in mind, as well as advice on burial, cremation and keeping a feather or two.
Backyard hens are common across Delhi, from suburban yards to farms, and they bring one rule every keeper should know: several sudden deaths in a flock may need to be reported before any bird is buried or cremated. For a single pet bird who died of old age, the choices are yours, and this page explains them.

Cremation customs in Delhi, and what they mean for birds
With roughly 80%[1] of people in Delhi cremated, many families already have an urn on a shelf. Some choose to keep a bird's remains beside a relative's, or to have them placed in a grandparent's grave later where cemetery rules allow. It's worth asking the cemetery before promising anyone, since rules on adding pet remains differ widely.
That Delhi rate is a human statistic published by Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Bird cremation prices for Delhi keepers
Pet funeral customs in Asia are often more elaborate than in the West. In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[2], while a Singapore columbarium lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a small pet under 5 kg[3]. Ask exactly what's included before you compare prices in Delhi.
Across much of Asia, communal pet cremation costs roughly half as much as higher-tier individual services[4]. For a small bird in Delhi, decide first whether you want remains returned, then ask whether a ceremony, columbarium niche or container is bundled into the price.
| Place | Example | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 communal / JPY 22,000 individual | Tax included |
| Tokyo, Shinjuku City collection | JPY 3,000 | Communal; ashes not returned |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | HKD 1,300 individual | Basic package |
| Singapore (small pet under 5 kg) | SGD 160 communal / SGD 280 private | Columbarium niches extra |

Local rules for birds and backyard flocks in Delhi
Cremating a pet bird rarely needs any permit. The rules that do apply to birds are about burial, scattering and disease: where you can dig a grave, and what to do if several birds die suddenly and avian influenza is possible. Here's what applies in Delhi.
What to do when your bird dies in Delhi
- If several backyard birds died suddenly, don't move them and don't book anything yet: ring your vet, or the agency that handles animal health, first.
- Keep your bird cool. In warm weather, aim to have them bagged and in the fridge inside an hour.
- Call your avian vet, or any local clinic if your avian vet is far away. They can confirm the death and store your bird.
- Ask your questions: will my bird be cremated alone, do you use a tray for tiny bodies, and how long until I get the remains?
- Decide who takes your bird there: yourself, the vet, or the provider's pickup service.
- Choose a container sized for grams, not pounds. A small keepsake urn, a locket or a glass vial is usually plenty.
Remembering your bird in Delhi
A garden stone is a simple marker for a bird buried in Delhi or for remains placed in a pot. By our estimate, engraved pet garden stones start at ~$39[6]. Some keepers paint their own instead, using the bird's colors, or press a feather into wet cement for a stepping stone. Any of these works indoors on a shelf, too.

Questions people ask
Can I scatter my bird's ashes in a park in Delhi?
Rules differ by park and landowner. Many public parks allow discreet scattering with permission, while others don't allow it at all, and private land needs the owner's agreement. As the amount is tiny, many families scatter at home, in a garden bed or a planter, and keep a little back.
How long do pet birds live?
Much longer than many owners expect, but often less than the records. The Association of Avian Veterinarians gives median captive life expectancies of about 5.5 years for budgies, 9 for cockatiels and African greys and 21 for blue-and-gold macaws. Birds are considered senior from around 6 (budgies) to 30 (macaws), which is a good time to plan aftercare.
How much does bird cremation cost in Delhi?
Birds fall into a provider's smallest weight band, so private cremation in Delhi usually costs about what a small cat's would. Big-city providers may charge more for collection; rural ones may add mileage. You can often save by bringing your bird in yourself. Ask for an itemized written total.
What should I do if my bird dies in the heat?
Wrap your bird in a paper towel, seal them in a bag and refrigerate them straight away; small bodies warm fast. In hot parts of Delhi, such as Delhi where summer highs average about °F, move any surviving birds somewhere cooler and watch them closely.
How much ash will my bird leave?
Very little. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, so a budgie leaves a gram or two, a cockatiel a few grams and a large macaw enough for a small keepsake urn. Ask providers in Delhi whether they use a tray so tiny remains can be recovered.
When will my bird's ashes come back in Delhi?
By our estimate, a typical window across the markets we cover is 3 to 14 days, though some providers are faster and some take several weeks. In rural parts of Delhi, where the nearest crematory may be hours away, allow longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether remains can be posted.
